Default Transmission Noises

Well in my 1984 944, my transmission has been making some pretty weird noises. Now of course its horrible trying to describe noises in text but bear with me. When im in 3rd, 4th, and 5th under acceleration, the transmission make a loud noise, almost like metal rubbing against something. In any gear, there is a sound like a clunk, that happens in itervals, which increase with rise in rpms. When I put the clutch in, its stops...Im thinking the throwout bearing? Im hoping its not the trans goin....Any ideas would be great guys thanks.

If the clunk is there with the clutch out, but goes away with the clutch in, it can't be the throw out bearing. Could be the pilot bearing.

I can't really tell you what the other problem is. Try to describe the sound a little bit more if you can.

torquetube bearingssssss

kind of a horrible rattling sound under acceleration or at idle until you step on the clutch?

its prolly those little buggers.

Ya seems to be the torque tube bearings, it does it under accel and slightly at idle. The Clarks Garage write up is a mile long for torque tube removal/rebuild...I cant catch a damn break! Anything wrong with driving it this way? Im sure it cant be good for the tranny..

I had the same problem and it sounds like the ring and pinion starting to go out.

At least it is easier to replace. I dropped mine in 45 min by myself. My new one will be in next week. It isnt hard at all but a second set of hands would really help.

Give me the rundown on how its done, Im the most inexperienced with trannys and clutches. The most ive done was swap a tranny and clutch in a VW Jetta, a walk in the park. Obviously not nearly the same case with the transaxle, anyone can swap a FWD tranny..

basic run down:
1-pull up both shift boots and remove the linkage pin
2-slide shift rod off
3-turn it and slide it forward for better axcess later on
4-take the inspection cover out of tranny and mark the coupler between the t-tube and tranny
5-unscrew the coupler
6-take the cv shafts off the trans and hang them level
7-unplug the reverse switch
8-remove the tranny housing to t-tube bolts
9-support trans
10-remove the tranny to chassis mounts
11-move trans back and diconnect the shiftrod
12-be careful not to damage the plastic tube for the shiftrod
Finnaly-drop the son-of-a-bitch!

I was going to say it's something in the tranny, not the TT.

Before you go taking things apart, try changing your gear oil. Maybe your current gear oil is very old, or maybe the level is low. I've heard some pretty bad noises come from trannies with low oil, and filling them up made everything better like magic.

75w90 synthetic. Most people like Redline MT-90, many say Swepco is better, and everyone agrees Amsoil is the best. I don't know where Mobil 1 fits in, but I'm using that and I think it's better than the redline I had in there before.

Mobil1 is the best. But the only problem is it has to be ordered by most parts stores.

The transaxle was designed more than 20 years ago with no synthetic gear oils....tolerences between shims and syncros, etc, were calculated based upon the properties of 75W90 gear oil. The synthetic gear oil is known to leak out of old seals that the regular oil will not.

I think its a personal preference, really. Just my opinion.

Yeah that was gonna be my first step anyways cus Im not sure how long ago the fluids were changed. So 75w90 oil is the winner.
