hey, my car has v-tec... sort of...

If you want to spend money on an NA 8v motor, I've always wondered what kind of gains could be seen with a stroker 2.8L 8v (3.0L crank). Maybe not much...

You mean nobody has ever done anything to N/A 8v's? I guess somebody has got to go against the grain with all these turbo lovers....

I think 944CS knows something about 9000rpm. Not sure if its to an 8v engine though.

Back on track, sort of. A top end rebuild would include valve guides, valve grind, shaving the head, new valvesprings, check the lifters... you could add a webcam and a header for another $1k or so and pick up a few HP. Beyond that (or even before that) I would suggest switching to a faster car rather than build. 944S2s make great NA power and are not that expensive, and you get lots of nice bits as well as the power. Bigger brakes, a sturdy trans, suspension bits...

A stroker might be interesting but the pistons would be expensive. You could use short rods and stock 2.5l pistons but the rod ratio is not too good then. The pistons from a LS2 or LS7 Chevy are kinda interesting, and might work with a rebore and some of that new ceramic coating. They are a 104.x mm 2v piston and I imagine the pin is set quite high in them. It'd be a lot of work to still get spanked by a $7500 944S2 though.

I was thinking along the lines of buying a turbo head and port and polishing it, decking it for a tad more compression, grind cam, turbo valve springs, bored throttle body, thats basicly it. Im hoping for around a 20 hp gain. Anybody know if this is possible? Also, are turbo valve springs signifcantly better than the N/A, is there a better option? Any stores that sell these types of parts?

OH YAH! Has anybody tried to unorthodox pulleys? Are they worth spending the money on? Thanks!

No - do not buy a turbo head for use on an na 944 - the exhaust port is restrictive and unchangeable practically speaking.

I know that some of the turbo guys switch their heads out for n/a heads, not sure why you'd want one.

You could always supercharge, there's a guy on here who did it pretty successfully.

Compression is always good, cams good, thin valves good, I'm sure I speak for most here we would love to see what dyno results you end up with. I agree that it's not going to blow your socks off, probably worth all told around 10 real hp. The PO of my 924S (Manning) has run the under-drive pulleys and indicated they also are not a noticeable increase, but I subscribe to the theory that all of this stuff along with a light weight policy certainly help! Good luck

Do people with the 16 valve cars ever mess around with valve timing?

I do understand that the upgrades I will be performing will not add much horsepower to the car. I find the feeling of all the parts working together, such as the bigger cam, and the increased flow through the cylinder head, more fascinating than the horsepower. Like many people have said, its all the little things you do to these cars that truly make them what they are.

Well then go for it dude!

The turbo head will be a downgrade for you - like special tool said. If you want the turbo valve springs then you can get those separately.

It won't add any power, but you could do some things to make the motor feel better. Get a throttle response cam - the 8v throttle cam is designed poorly. Also, if you have an early car, get a late computer and late AFM (early AFM won't work with late computer). The new computer will have 2 benefits: no more rev shudder when revs drop down to idle, and they have chip sockets for easy swapping of chips.
