Question Broken Gas Pedal Mount

I spent a few minutes searching to no avail, so here I go.

I have a big, metal aftermarket gas pedal that came with the car when I bought it. The grip tape on it was looking ratty so I took off the pedal to remove the grip tape and put on fresh tape. Unfortunately (and presumably because of the location of the bolts in the floorpan where moisture is present often, and that the included hardware was likely utter crap) when I went to remove the nuts holding the accelerator down (there are two bolts coming up from the floor) they both broke loose by bringing half of the bolt with them. Argh.

So now I have two little half-bolts that do a surprisingly good job of holding the pedal in place, but when I heel-toe, that strange twisting motion imposed sometimes causes the pedal to "twist" clockwise. The throttle position itself doesn't really change, and, hell, this car would be drivable without a pedal altogether, but I would still like to fix it.

Can anyone tell me if those bolts are taken out from underneath the car, on the exterior, or how exactly it's done? Furthermore, does anyone know the size bolt/nut I might need? The old ones were far too rusted to be of any use.

Lastly, has anyone else ever had this happen to them?

I am not sure. They may have been pressed into the pan during manufacturing.

You may be able to grind them down. Then drill them out and replace them with bolts going through the floor board. I think the bolts are M4 or M6. Be sure to primer the floor board to prevent corrosion.

Yeah... it's not a good thing. there is an air cavity between 2 sheets of metal down there. to get to em from under the car, you'll have to cut an access hole in the actual bottom of the car to be able to drill them out and replace them with new bolts sticking through.

Methinks this is body shop kinda work... good luck!

dangit. i guess it isn't that big of an issue, but i would like it fixed. i'm just surprised no one else has had to deal with this (or at least no one has spoken up).

Can't you grind the area down to bare metal and weld a strong hinge then bolt (or weld) the other part of the hinge to the aftermarket pedal?

I suppose I could do that. I'm not exactly thrilled to start welding away, however. When I get a chance this weekend I'll lift up the car and try to find those bolts. I seriously can't believe no one else has had to deal with this yet

this is how it stands at the moment......

these pictures are fairly old and i'm willing to bet that the studs are even more ground down now. i was cleaning the carpet at the time so disregard the wet spot (and the wiring, etc., haha)

ok, i am in the midst of fixing yet another mount problem in the interior (seat mounts) and i figure i'll at least attempt to fix this today.

my plan is to drill down into those rusted out bolts and put in some self tapping screws, even wood screws. the issue is i have no idea where the drill bit might come out if i were to totally drill them out and replace them with, say, a nut/bolt setup.
