Clutch Failure Pictures - NA
My last race at PIR I scored my first DNF in a few years in my 944 spec car. Motor ran fine, but the car did not move. The failure was sudden and occured shift from 2nd to 3rd 3 corners from the end the of race chasing for 1st in class. Cool thing was on the cool down lap Norm (the guy I was chasing for first) pushed me back in to the pits so I did not need to waite for the wrecker. Thank Norm.
At the time I assumed it was my gearbox that I had been using since November of 2000. Figured it was time for a R&P failure. Turned out I was wrong. I experineced a clutch failure. This stock spring centered clutch was installed by me in Jan 2003.
The clutch has 66 races spaning 76 track days on it covering those 5 years.
Here are some pictures of the failed disk.
The disk failed at the metal attachment to the outer ring. The is very little wear on the friction surface and the pressure plate. The pressure plate was reused and a new disk has been installed for the next race.

Now there's something you don't see during a clutch job....
I've never seen a failed disk in that way before. Usually the friction plate is pretty solid on the disk. Amazing.

Yeah, but it was better than the first lap of the first practice of the next event. I would have lost the entire weekend. This way I just lost the last half mile of the last race of 2007 season. It did cost me a spot in the season championship and $100 toyo dollars. From a solid 2nd place to 8th on the white flag lap. There was no warning either. One second the car was pulling hard in 2nd gear and the next I put it in 3rd and thought I missed a shift when the engine reved and the car went nowhere. Luckily I had place to pull off to so that I did not get powed into from behind.

You are looking at the clutch disk (broken) and pressure plate (good).
Here is what the disk should look like (this from an S2 however)
All the power from the engine get transmitted from the outside ring to the center splines and then on to throught the torque tube. When the ring seperates from the inside like this power no longer reaches the ground.
