Default Has anyone seen the July 85 Motor Trend ?

"The Best Porsche: Is it the new 944 Turbo or the venerable 911?"

If not, I'll scan the rest of it.

I know some are upside down.. I have other stuff to do right now so I'm not flipping them around until later. Any tips on how to get a better scan? Higher DPI?? Is there anyway to scan the pages so its easy to read?

i just read through it and they dont give a definite winner

although if going by their point system average the 944 wins.

well the 944 absolutely destroys it in terms of torque..

id like to see an actual skidpad result though. I recall seeing somewhere that it was tested at .89g...anyone know?

June '88 R&T lists 100ft skid pad of a '88 951S as .89 g's with 225/245 Goodyear Eagle VR50 tires

Ive got another issue of a R&T scan that says .90 g's for a '86 model 951, 205/225 Pirelli P7's

Another R&T article from December '87 does a test of all the 4-cylinder cars in the Porsche line up..924S, 8v n/a, 16v n/a and 951. The results were a bit less spectacular,

924S - .79
8v n/a - .79
16v n/a - .83
951 - .80

Surprisingly in the same test the 8v n/a had the fastest slalom speed. Who knows what tires they were using or the other test conditions.

All of these tests were done with 20 year old tire technology. Who knows how they compare to whats out today, but maybe tack on a few hundredths of a G for the tire handicap.

I think one of the best 'comparison' articles was from Automobile, June '88. They had a Turbo S vs a 930 Turbo. The 951 lapped Willowsprings 2 seconds faster and in the end, they admited it was a better performer. But there was something about the allure of the 930 they couldnt get over. Having driven a 930, i can see what they are saying. Theres something about a turbocharged flat-6 roaring behind you, the horrible turbo lag that pins you to the seat and the respect knowing the car will send you *** backwards into a tree without remorse.
