Default Should I have my 87 44S fixed?

Hey guys,

Just wanted to bounce this off you guys. The clutch on my 87 944S went out last week. It will cost about $1700 to get it fixed, the car has 101k miles, the interior, exterior and engine are all in good condition. should I get it fixed, or sell as is?

Thanks!

You'll get a junker trade-in price for a car with a broken clutch, no matter how nice it is.

Is it your only car? If you plan on selling it and can drive another car meanwhile, I would let it sit until spring and then spend the money and sell it for a better price than you could as it is now.

Assuming you can't do it yourself, the S models are going for $4000-$6000 right now. I've been watching cuz I was thinking of selling mine. If your interior is somewhat clean, and the belts/seals have been done, I'd say fix 'er up.

or just buy mine off me (new clutch/belts/seals/ac) so I can get a 948

you can get the parts for 600 if you want to tackle it yourself. It can be a pain, though.

You can get disc (Power Friction) from vertex for 189$.

Read here http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/clutch-01.htm
how to change the disc.

You should use clutch kit but you could get away with disc only.

Last time I did a clutch I did a disk only, the pressure plate was in good shape (despite the pilot bearing choking all its guts out). I did wet sand the pp to get the clutch material off (1000 grit), but I think it probably would have been fine either way. I cleaned the flywheel with gasoline. Worked like a charm, and I saved some $$.

No brainer.

$1700 buys you back a pretty nice S. Or a 10 year old Hyundai.

btw - mine's got ~150K on it now and it has never been better.

Fix it! Like gtroth said, $1700 buys you back a nice 944S.

I've been quoted $1500 for the clutch job though. Maybe call around for different quotes. However the best way is to do it yourself. $500 in parts and a few days, and you get to learn about how your car works.

A 944 hybrid with a Chevy V8 engine. AKA "Porschev."

They seem to be getting popular.

update: I'm going to have the clutch done. The car will dropped off at the shop tomorrow. Here's what she looks like.

Thanks for the feedback!
