Hey guys,

My ABS light is on and I was wondering if there was a way to bypass it and make the idiot light turn off (I don't mean just pulling the bulb). I've tested the wheel sensors thru the control module connector and also tested the relay and everything checks out fine. Is there a way to get it to shut off?

Haven't been able to have it diagnosed, and no it does not work. It worked for about a month, then the light came on randomly and has been on ever since (~Dec. 2004). Now it is the only light on the dash I haven't fixed so it's bothering me. I was just wondering if I could trick the computer into thinking there is no problem until I can have a diagnostic run on it.

There is a plug connector, I recall its a 4 wire connector, underneath the glovebox that is for the ABS. You might try disconnecting that and pulling the ABS relay.

That will cut all power to the unit, and will also disconnect it from the instrument cluster, so I think that will eliminate the dash fault light.

Just make sure to get the right connector, there is a lot of wiring for the DME/KLR and also the passenger compartment wiring harness (for the p-side window, mirror and stereo speakers) all routed through the same area.

Clark's garage has a write-up on a way to turn the light off. Unfortunately when I tried it on my car it did not work, but I know it has worked for others. If that fails, the dealer has a way to turn it off very quickly. That's what I ended up doing and they didn't even charge me!

Unfortunately I'm nowhere near a dealer! Gah, I hate being in the middle of nowhere! I'll try unplugging the connector tonight, thanks guys!

FWIW, the last time I had an ABS light on in my S2, it was an ABS sensor that wasn't properly plugged in. From what you say, I can't tell if you've checked anything at the wheel end?

You could try pulling the wheels off the car one at a time and making sure the ABS sensors are plugged in correctly. Clean the contacts out and see if the light goes out when you replug them.

I'd be willing to give up some electronics on my cars, but definitely not ABS. It's saved my a## too many times!

Hmm...thanks Luis, I checked their resistance at the plug and all read 1000+ ohms there so I figured that was good (according to a write up I printed off from here). Good idea none the less and I will do that when I get home, thanks!

Check to make sure the pickup rings on the hubs have not backed off (preventing a sensor from reading the teeth properly). I have seen this a number of times. They are just pressed onto the hubs.

Doesn't this require removal of the discs?

If you are handy with a mirror, you can pull the sensors out and peer through the hole to make sure the teeth are centered in the hole.

You can also look for AC voltage at the ABS controller for each wheel, look up the wire colors in the wiring diagram. You have to be driving to do this, but you can hook up a DMM and drive around slowly.

Does the ABS light come on right away or after a few feet of driving? If it comes on right away that usually means something is broken. If it comes on after you have driven a few feet that usually means it's not seeing voltage from one of the wheel sensors. It might also mean that it tried to operate the ABS pump and no worky. I think it hits the ABS pump as a test when you back up after starting the car.
