Default VANdalized! How do I remove spray paint from the side of my car?

At least it wasn't a Porsche...Just my Chevy Astro cargo van.

It got tagged the other night. I'd like to get it removed as quickly as possible to discourage any additional art. I don't really have time to do it myself. Do body shops commonly do this sort of thing? What do they charge?

I'm not terribly concerned with the condition of the paint, but I don't want a big off-white square on the side of my van, either...

if the paint on the van was decent before and you waxed it from time to time some light rubbing compound by hand may do the trick if the solvents of the spray penetrated the paint you may be SOL but some compound by hand would be a good start for something to try. if it works and it scares you take it to a detailer.

Try this- Get a bottle of nail polish remover, along with a bucket of soapy warm water, and go to it. try a small area, then make sure you wash of same before you move onto next area. NPR will keep on removing if you dont wash it off. You'll need to re-apply wax after.

Nail polish remover is mostly acetone which can be purchased at lowes etc cheaply. It is a very fast eveporating solvent so it shouldn't attack your paint but it will leave a little haze. Spray can paint doesn't cure so you should be in good shape as it should dissove with acetone. You'll need lots of clean rags or towels though.

Hey;

If the paint on th van is OEM and in good condition, you do not have to worry too much about damaging it with a solvent. If it is a repaint you need to be more careful. Whenever trying something like this, default to the least invasive method and work up from there.

Compound might take it right off. Next I would try enamel reducer. Last would be lacquer thinner. Do the solvent thing carefully to start, trying just a small spot and working your way up.

I'm betting it comes right off, especially if the van paint is original.

I haven't tried this particular product of theirs, but some of their other stuff has worked great for other needs.

I vote for a claybar as well, if that doesn't work, the acetone should...I would follow that up with a good polish and wax.

I get tagged all the time here. Its very simple and I unfortunately have to do this about twice a month as they love my 24ft enclosed trailer to tag their damn gang signs. I use a can of carburetor cleaner on a rag. The can paint comes right off every time and wax the spot immediately to neutralize the remaining carb cleaner. This is why I tell people never to paint their car with can paint.

Clay bar. Saw this demonstrated at a detailing workshop, on a 928 as I recall... yes, they spraypainted the car right then and there!

Claybar.

Or if you have any IBIZ wax, believe it or not, that stuff also removes spray-can paint... as it waxes!

I'm with Lego. I've used carb cleaner, brake cleaner, electrical cleaner.

Use rubber gloves and spray small amounts into a rag, and wipe away.

Rinse with cold water immediately after you're done removing.
