I need a good recommendation for paint for my phone dials that I'm going to be painting black. There appears to be a major shortage of Duplicolor Satin Black. I don't mind if the paint is glossy, but I would prefer a satin finish and a satin clear coat over it.
Anyone have any good recommendations?

Ive had good results with Duplicolor high temp engine paint... been using semi-gloss and semi-flat black for the satin look. I used the high temp type paint because it was all i had on hand when i first experimented painting the wheels. I liked the results and kept on using it.

The white phone dials that Eric posted were some of my 'earlier' work i guess you could say.. the prep job i did on those was nothing special. Basically cleaned the wheel and sprayed it. If you really take the time to clean and scuff up the old surface, the paint sticks really well. Ive had the black set on my car now for over 8k miles..and they have been taken off plenty of times for auto-x's and other maitenance. I also did not clear coat these either. Touch ups literally take 1 minute.. dont even need to mask the tire off![Big Grin](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Im going to redo them this winter while ive got my winter tires on.. going to add a thin red strip along the lip.

I was thinking about powdercoating a set of wheels white- the track wheels would look less ridiculous, but the paint on the race wheels is a lot better off than the non-existent street wheel paint.
Of course my g/f wants me to get them powdercoated green!

Jon, is the Duplicolor high heat peat pretty durable? How many times did you have to touch up? I was thinking of applying a clear on it after talking to some people last night. Probably going to do 2 coats of base and 3 coats of clear...

White is a bear... unless you want to clean them religiously after each track day, they won't be white for long. That's why I'm going black.
The ones I got from Jon are white... well, they were at one time.

The white lasted about a mile before they turned gray
.
The high heat stuff has been plenty durable.. have only touched up one wheel once in about 8 or 9k miles. That was mainly because i didnt clean the wheel very well prior to painting. I didnt even base coat them. Scuffed the old surface, cleaned and painted. They were meant to be track wheels but ended up being my everyday wheels. They are plenty presentable for a daily driver.

How many coats of the black did you use Jon? I really like that satin look, but am just afraid of it getting damaged. Can you wax them too without making them glossy?
