Default Got a reply from Porsche AG

Received an email reply from Porsche regarding my desire for a new "poor-man's Porsche" to be sold. Thought it was polite and fun reply, seeing how it no doubt has no impact in what they will do, and no reply was even expected. Thought I'd share it here...

"Hello Matt,
Thank you for your long time love of Porsche. I will pass your email on to our headquarters dept and possibly in the future there can be a 'bare-bones' model available and we'll look for you driving around in it!
Kind regards,
Porsche General Response Team"

WOW!

That is really cool. We should bombard them with responses and send that cool rework of the 944 from the other thread.

edit: Matt, what e-mail address did you send it two?

They should just strip the Cayman and take $10k off the price.

Would still be overpriced. And enough with the mid-engine cars already!

Why?
2010: For 40k you could get a loaded ZX or a stripped Porsche.
Result?

1989: For 30K you could get a loaded ZX or a stripped Porsche.
Result - Porsche on verge of bankruptcy, gets help from a japanese auto manufacturer and in the mid 90s brings out the Boxster, uses many Boxster parts on flagship 911 and returns to prosperity.

So, is it true history doesnt repeat itself?

Agreed - and the loaded ZX beat the holy hell out of the loaded Porsche Today, a base model Cayman costs 5k more than a Corvette - and the 'vette absolutely pulverizes it. Since the mid 90s, Porsche has been working like crazy to use snob appeal in order to distract buyers from the fact that they are paying big $$$ for a car with less performance than A LOT of cheaper alternatives.

In 1986, the 951 had a virtually identical MSRP to the Corvette, and ate the Chevy's lunch. Times have changed.

My point exactly.

Further, their desire not to "dilute" the brand while understandable, certainly isn't their justification for an SUV and NASCAR...?

On a side note, read on NissanUSA.com that Nissan has a 2.5L Turbocharged inline 4-cyl sports coupe in the works. Probably not to the performance standards of a 350Z, but sounds like a fun little car. Which means it will be right up there with a base Boxster, for $20k less. From their website, thought the wording was interesting...

"a fresh interpretation of the classic compact sports coupe"

Adjusted for inflation, an 83 944 is $35k in today's dollars.

The Cayman is much, much more for an extra 5 grand. I think there's a reason almost everybody puts the engine behind the driver in modern race cars...

FWIW, that Nissan above looks like a Scion tC. Awful.

Not sure I buy that argument. Is SHOULD be "much, much more" given technological advances in the last 24 years. If it wasn't "much, much more" Porsche would be a joke.

Also, you can't touch a Cayman for $40K (which I'm gathering is what you're saying based upon $35K + $5k) -- base is $50k. Also, it's not THAT much more car... And going to the "S" for any real performance and now you're looking at a base of $60k (which for another $10 just get a friggin' 911).

Not saying I like the design. I'm saying I like the idea.

I know. I said above that they should make a real base model by stripping the base Cayman and bringing the price down to 40. Sort of like a 924S model. Spec out wheels that are 16s or narrow 17s, take a mm or two off the sway bars, cut 10 hp. Easy cost-effective entry level car, one step above an Elise in daily driver ability.
