I know someone already did this in last year's race... so it's gotta be possible.

That said... I'd love to be involved in a project like this, and would be more than willing to help out (provided I got one of the driver's seats).

I got one that I bought with a blown head gasket off ebay for less than $500. It was an ex dirt circle track car with a FULL welded cage (even around all 4 wheels so a corner impact won't damage the suspension or wheels) and completely gutted with steel mesh front windshield delete. I would bet an impact against a suburban will cause more damage to the truck than the 944. It came with a fuel cell but I am going to reinstall the stock gas tank because they may suspect the car's worth being over $500 even though its not. The car looks like its been in a demolition derby several times but came complete. I figure it would have cost me more than $1500 just for the cage alone but according to the rules, safety equipment is exempt from the $500 limit. I want to enter the race but don't have many track experienced people who wants to do this with me. If you are near L. A. and want to do this for next year, let me know and maybe we can form a team of 5 people.

What's the car weigh with that massive cage?

Not sure but this thing came thoroughly gutted with a a custom made sheet metal dash (no speedo) and 95 percent of factory wiring removed including the brake lights. The door is just a skin made of tin foil and I took it off because its so ugly with all the dents and not operational (climb in like dukes of hazard). The sunroof is deleted and has sheet metal riveted on. There is absolutely no interior and the cage was welded by cutting the roof off so its a serious cage. The gas tank and the sheet metal above it has been removed so you can see the transmission from inside the car if you flip up the custom lid. The battery was relocated to the rear with headlight delete and pretty much everything else deleted. If I had to guess, this thing probably weighs 2400 to 2500 pounds.

I just can't believe they consider that a $500 car including preparation. My fear is it could be chosen as the one to be demolished....

something tells me they'll want them.

> 100 cars
< 1.0 miles of track
= .01 miles, or ~50ft of track / car (at best)

From this shot it looks the car was "totaled" before was transformed thus a great case for it being worth less than the sum of its parts.

I've been thinking of doing something for 24 hours of Lemons on July of next year, anyone in SF or Marin want to form a team? With all of the sub $500 Craigslist cars on here lately, it's been getting pretty tempting (especially when one comes up that has a new clutch, new suspension, etc but a bad head).

I love 944s, seriously love them a lot. But if I entered 24 hours of lemons, I would do it in a Mercedes 300D turbo. Or non turbo is fine too. But the 944 is a good choice too.

Jason, if I wasn't preoccupied with school, and my planned summer project (secret), I'd be in...

Bah, well thats fine. I didn't realize you were in SLO already. I bought those rain gutters, it was interesting getting them on, but I managed, using the late model brackets too!
