Default Questions about 924/944/968 Torque tubes

Was wondering if anyone knows the answers to the following questions:

1. Do the three torque tubes have the same inner diameter?

2. Do they all use two or three bearing units?

3. Do they all use the same diameter (25mm) drive shafts?

Thanks in advance,
Constantine

The 944, 951, 968 all use 4 bearings. The issue seems to be finding replacement bearings in the looser OE C5 rating. Even finding C4 is impossible anymore as I've been trying for over a year. If C3 bearing are used I think a high-temp grease (Crytox) in the sealed unit is essential. I have some custom Delrin bearing spacers ready for a TT rebuild but am still apprehensive about using a C3 bearing and having them bind up.

If you find any bearings, please let me know... I have Jon's latest round of delrin bushings hanging out as well... awaiting the rebuild...

I had a Euro source that was 'sure' he would find them but after a month of inquiries he gave up. That leaves the C3 with Crytox hi-temp grease as about the only option. My concern is that Porsche chose that looser bearing for a reason and I'm concerned what a closer tolerance bearing will do when hot. If the TT bearings start binding under hard hot conditions the results would be ugly to say the least. I'm still looking for some C3 Crytox injected units. If I can get enough people interested I think I can get the price down to about $15/bearing but I've been quoted $25/bearing for just 4. Damn Porsche and their oddball specs.

Good start about the bearings, much appreciated!

Now how about the drive shafts? I measured a 944 drive shaft and found it to be 25mm in diameter. Are all 944 drive shafts the same. If so, how about the 924 and 968?

Also need the inner diameter of the different torque tubes.

Thanks much,
Constantine

Constantine,
The inner diameter of the torque tubes are the same, as is the driveshaft diameter. All use same size bearings, and bearing carriers. Driveshaft length differs between the 968 and 944. I have a 968 and a 944 torque tube at my shop, I'll measure them for you tomorrow.
Steve,
I'd be in for a set of bearings even if it ends up being $25 each.

Just for info, if you do search for bearings they are a '6006 ZZ C4', preferably with hi-temp grease, which is a 30x55x13 double steel shielded (2Z or ZZ). The original was a '6006 2Z C5 HT51' and you won't find them anywhere.

Here's some good info also for alternatives.

Thanks for the information Paul! Please let me know the measurements when you get them.

Cheers,

According to Jim Pasha from '924/944/968 Drivetrain Components' article, Excellence magazine, pg. 109, issue #48, Oct. 1994 -

"It is important to understand that the 924 uses a smaller diameter driveshaft and transaxle input shaft than the 924 turbo and subsequent 944s. The coupling collar on these transaxle input shafts will not fit the 924"

Thanks T! So I wonder how much smaller the 924 driveshaft is...

Hey guys.

Does anyone know the inside diameter of the Torque Tube for a 1987 Porsche 924s? My thought is that it's the same as the Porsche 944 and 968? I'm thinking of buying some Torque tube carriers from Jager Engineering but they have no idea if it'll fit my car or not, so much for their customer service lol!

I'll probably replace the bearings with some of these also:

Is this a good idea???

Anywho, any help will be appreciated.

Thanks Porsche 944 TECHS!
