Default 944Online / KLA fiberglass 968 replica spoiler mounted

I had some time yesterday and mounted this fiberglass reproduction 968 hoop spoiler. The spoiler was originally from the now defunct 944Racing and from older posts i see was also sold by KLA back around 2001. The parts came in a primer finish which needed some final sanding to get perfect. I painted all the parts myself and i am happy at the results for a first time job. I used a Dupont Chromabase paint put into a spray can for me and clear coat. It was more of a experiment more than anything. Ive painted a number of parts on my car using Krylon with good sucess, but it was never a pefect match (Slightly darker) basically my entire front valance has been touched up, 968 mirrors and rear valance. I still need to finish compounding and polishing the paint on the spoiler, but that is for this weekend.

Anyhow i was not able to get the trim pieces mounted yet as i ran out of time. I had to drill out more than half of the screws holding on the old spoiler which took much longer than expected. Once that was off, i started to fit the main spoiler portion. The wing needed to be flexed considerably in order for the mounting holes to line up. I basically bolted the wing portion down completley on one side and flexed the wing by hand in order to get the other studs through the mounting holes. To get the last corner of the wing secured, it took myself and two friends to hold the wing in place. I was holding the nut and wrench trying to keep it from falling out, my friend was turning the screw driver and my other friend was holding the wing up against the glass. Its hard to 'grade' the fitment on the wing. The holes lined up perfectly once the wing was flexed...but the fact the wing needed to be flexed at all i guess takes away from the final 'score'.

I tested fitted the trim pieces this morning. The drivers side piece fits perfectly, but the drivers side piece is going to require some trimming to fit perfectly, not much though. Mostly a small portion of the corner that needs to be ground down a bit. I think it might be somewhat related to the fitment of the wing (The fact it needed to be flexed somewhat).

I made a rookie mistake of sanding a little to hard on the corners and went right through the paint. The area is mostly covered by the trim..so i am just going to cover it with touch up paint

Anyhow the trim pieces have studs inbedded in them which line up to the holes in the hatch. Some of the studs are not lined up perfectly and its sort of a tight squeeze to get the trim piece to fit perfect. I am thinking of cutting the studs off with a dremel and using heavy duty double sided tape to attach the trim pieces. Im not 100% sure what i am going to do yet.

Man. It's such a toss up between leaving mine black or painting it guards red.

I wish the S2 hoops would have been like the 968's and been color matched to the body instead of black!

The one on my coupe is black, and I like the way it looks matched to the guards red body...

Whoops, i meant 944Racing. Not 944Online.. .

I considered painting it black as it would match the rest of the red / black thing going on with my car. But i just love the way it looks color matched with black trim pieces.

Wait, so not all 968s have body matched hoops?

i looked at a tip 968 before i bought my first 944- it was a light green metallic w/ a color matched spoiler. Loved that look since i first saw it. Looking good.

Looks good Jon.

I would consider leaving the studs that line up in the trim pieces and only removing the ones that don't line up. I don't like the double-sided tape idea as the only means of attachment. One other tip, when you are bolting down the trim pieces with the split nuts, be careful not to over-tighten them. The studs pull out of the fiberglass fairly easily.

On the 968 color matching of the hoop spoiler was an option. They only painted the "hoop" the trim pieces along the side were still black.

Nice work Duck!

Smokie-

Thanks for the clarification. If I paint my hoop, I will only be painting it. I really don't like the idea of painting the trim. It's just too much red once you go that far.

is it harder to close the hatch now? I cant imagine you'd close it using the spoiler?
