Default How the heck is the stereo attached?

So I'm yanking out the centre console in order to remove the shifter so that I can replace the foam insulation that I may stop the hot 'n' oily engine air from belching into the cockpit ... got it all unscrewed, no sweat no strain, BUT, I can't figure out how the frickin' head unit is attached to the frickin' console. There don't seem to be any screws visible, and I don't see any holes for the side-pin clip thingies that so many other cars have.

Any advice? I'd rather not have to disconnect all the wires for the head unit, my preference is to leave it in place and take the console out around it.

It's a Sony, can't remember the exact model. Has CD, iPod, USB and line in.

Oh and the car's an '87 944 NA.

What's not going to fly? The foam-in-the-hole operation? Frankly I'm not worried about it being crappy or half-assed; anything's better than the way it is now.

You will need two thin metal key shaped tools that go down on each side of the unit. They push in the tang that's holding the thing in place.

Sorta looks like this (you'll need two):

Aha, I see. Presumably knives would work.

er, knives don't work as well. from what it seems, the little keys have a tab that releases something on the stereo mount. last time i removed a stereo i tried using a pair of knives, then a pair of screwdrivers, then some other flat stuff, a gun, explosives, etc. but nothing worked as well as when i had the key.

Drive by any Bes Buy, ask them to pull it out an inch...drive home and do your repairs and then stick it back in.

Cool, I'll see what I can figure out.

Nice to know explosives won't work, I'll scratch that off the list.

Call Juan. He instinctively knows how to remove any stereo from any car.

IDK about later cars but the early cars had a sort of clip-in bracket that the back of the radio slides into. They are sometimes troublesome in installing and uninstalling the radio.
