Question Gauge cluster ?'s

Hey everyone! I'm new to this forum and after searching around couldn't find the answer I was looking for. So I figured I'd post a new thread! I've recently acquired 1988 944 with a busted trans. Fixed that problem (Well sorta). I noticed that the gas gauge isn't reading very well, kinda jumps all around. I have a spare gauge cluster from a 90 944 S2. Can I just swap these two out, or could I just take the gas gauge out of the S2 cluster and put it in the old cluster? Thanks for your help!

You should be able to swap them. If that doesn't fix your problem then it's most likely your fuel level sender.

That's a good thing to know! I just tore it apart before I install it and found the odometer gear is broken, I'll take it out of the other cluster and replace that gear and see what happens!

Just swapped in the S2 cluster, the engine oil light comes on, never did that on my old cluster, and the big red idiot light obviously comes on! On an upside the gas gauge works great! LOL BTW the oil pressure gauge reads 5 at startup and once it warms up goes down to three or four. I changed the oil the other day and it is in the middle of the dipstick, level wise. I guess I'll just be gauge swapping between the two clusters to get one the works! If someone has any other ideas I'm willing to hear them!

The oil pressure issue could be the sending unit as well.

Would what the pressure gauge is reading be considered normal? It's always been that way for me. Also are you talking about the oil pressure sending unit or the oil level sending unit?

In regards to your pressure gauge. My car usually reads ~2 when fully warm and idling.

When I get home from work and school today, I'm gonna check out the sending units to make sure the wires are all connected and not rotted away. Would it be ok to keep driving it as long as i keep an eye on the oil pressure gauge?
