What's up? I'm looking for thoughts of the board here.
I found a 1986 944 where the timing belt failed and led to the inevitable cylinder heads problems. It appears in good order otherwise. 110,000 miles.
What is this car worth? What have other's paid?
I'm looking to turn this car into a track car and a potential PCA club racer.
Thanks in advance.

$5.
Unfortunately there's no way to know if the tranny's good, if the LSD (if applicable) is good, etc. until you fix the motor. If you're lucky, then just the head'll be bad. If unlucky, then the pistons and cylinders will be bad.
Personally, I'd try to scope out an ugly 944 with a good engine and turn that into a track car.
Then again, if I had the money, I'd offer the guy $1000-1500 (max) for the car as-is and throw an LS1 into it.

You may want to just find a 944 in decent shape that is reliable mechanically and start with a racer from there rather than trying to get it road worth and then trying to race spec it. My 2 cents, anyway.

thanks. You've all injected a does of reality into my life. Everything about the car "looks" in order, but as was said you never know until the engine is fixed and you start driving it. Plus, it's been sitting for two years with the cylinder head removed.
The owner is "asking" $2100 for the car and I effectively told him he'd be lucky to get $1500 out of it. He was taken aback just a little bit by my comment.
What concerns me is that this was his "project" and he's given up on it.
What sorts of problems am I buying?
I think I'll keep looking.......

I saw an '83 944 at a race shop this past week that has new belts, seals, etc. that he is asking $3000.00 for. Tom is a reputable shop owner and if I was shopping I would seriously consider buying this car. It would be a much better car than the one you are looking at.

FWIW, I bought my '86 about two years ago for $4,200 - which is probably on the high side. New clutch (with paperwork), 110,00 miles at the time and perfectly running.
It needed a new air filter
and a little buffing on the paint on the hood.
Other than that, it was a typical 944- cracked dash, slight separation of the hatch (less than 1" currently). Everything else worked - except the clock bulb, and it mysteriously came to life a year ago, and the seats weren't worn.
Very light wear on the leather steering wheel.

There is no such thing as a cheap Porsche, ask me how I know......my 83 944 was an introduction to a wallet flattening experience
Well, I have an 84 Mazda RX7 GSLSE, and owned a couple more RX 7s in the past, and assumed I would get the same lack of issues and reliability with the 944, well not so at all.
I think a 944 which sat for years with the cylinder head off is not worth the time and expense to fix. Parting it out, if I could buy it for $500, might make sense.
If I bought another 944, I would pay a good buck for one which has a full maintenance history, and from a 944 enthusiast. In fact, I have the hots for an S2, so I'll probably buy one off the classifieds here.
