Question What's hiding in my hatch?

Is there anything beneath the pad pointed to by the red arrow in the picture? I see that the fuel level sender is under the white pad.

I'm trying to locate a fuel smell that is coming from the hatch area. This is on the 83.

No, nothing but metal. It's a touch of extra sound deadening over the tranny.

Secret compartment either full of cocaine or stashes of money.

I smell fuel in the car if the tank is over halfway full and I make a semi hard to hard left hand turn. Right hand turns have no effect. could this be the overflow hose as well?

Oh, wise guy!

When I lifted the cover on the fuel sender, I got a pretty good whiff of gas. So I'm suspecting the gasket on that. I also checked the overflow and that is routed correctly. Area around the fuel pump, filter and hoses on the tank seem fine. Is there any place this could be coming from?

I have a cap and gasket for sale. I bought it and replaced it but it turned out that there was a hole in the tank. So I have a spare set.

Maybe, check the hoses are attached to the spigots under the filler pipe. I had a similar problem if a gas jockey spilt gasoline around the filler pipe, the whole car was stunk out with gas fumes. One of the two overflow hoses, the other is to drain the sunroof on the passenger's side, was not protruding out the hole in the bottom of the cubby to dump the gas out into the open, so the cubby had gasoline swilling around, which accounted for the horrible gas smell. On my 83 944 by the way.

On my 968 the metal tubes coming out of the sender were loose at the solder joint causing the same issue (smell when 1/2 to full turning left, the gas would splash around and leak through the joint)

FWIW...My car had a bad gas smell on left handers. Never noticed it on street tires, but once I put the R-compounds on, it was very noticeable. I just followed the wet gas on the side of the car up to the gas cap, and replaced it. No more smell . Ok, the car still smells...but not like gas...as much.

i found four hundred dollar bills in a 924s one time..

probl the "T" for the gas filler overflow that taps into the ps sunroof drain in the back. Tends to clog up then the line vents gas up near the sunroof. Ive also seen the sending unit have cracked lines before.

Mine doesn't have a "T". It's a separate line from the overflow right down into the wheel well, then out towards the tranny.

Where do the vent lines connect to the tank? I can see one from below the car above the tranny, but it disappears above the tank. How do you get to those?
