Default overheating 944?

So my 1988 944 overheats when I stop for awihle while the engine is running? Like at a drive thru or waiting in line for drive through banking, but when i drive down the road the temp seems to be okay? When i shut off the car and get out the fan is electric fan is on till the car cools down enought. Does any one have any ideas? Was thinking the thermostat, but it was replaced 2 years ago.

Not nec. the radiator. This is common of a leak that is pulling air into the system. It could be anywhere. These cars get really hot with ANY trapped air in the coolant system. Hell it's possible you have a weak HG, bad radiator, leak in a line, siezing waterpump, loose belts, all sorts of things.
When you say it overhaets, tell us exactly what is happening vis a vis temp gauge.

I drive it, low temp, no heat. the more I drive it the more it heats up. when i stop for any time, say a long light or drive thru a fastfood drive thru, it starts overheating and the warning light comes on, but as soon as i start driving again the temp drops, all the while I get intermitent heat from the heater. So If I have air in there, it turns to steam and basically boils any reaming anti freeze? I have no water in exhaust or oil. And I have no oil in water. So I'm not thinking head gasket. Thermastat was change in late 04 by previous owner.

No not exactly. air heats up far faster than liquid and especially coolant. Have a pressure test done on your system. It could be a simple as a bad coolant overflow cap. Something is putting air in the system.
the cooling system on these cars is often very tough to diagnose quickly.

Well it's not hard to change as long you have a good pair of snap ring pliers, (snap on) and make sure you use the proper gasket, do not use the O-ring type.

ok, porscheEH! says not to use the O-ring type of gasket.

I now have a thermostat with the proper gasket that goes around the edge of the stat.

What kind of problems would one have using an O-ring gasket?

So I tried to bleed the system, and all I get is steam. I removed and tested the thermostat. It works just fine. An 82 C unit. Is that about right? But I'm still over heating. The fans both work? I'm scratching my head, could it be the water pump? I need help, not sure if I'm just missing something stupid.
So when you bleed the system, how should it be done?

After the car is running, feel the top radiator hose and feel the bottom radiator hose. Are they similar temperature?

Also, you said you tried to bleed and all you get is steam?? Very simply, turn the car on, losen bleed bolt, wait until a constant stream of coolant, and tighten up.

It could very well be the water pump.

bleed bleed and bleed again, I'm still getting all the air out of my system. Of course if I'd quit opening up the system I could quit bleeding for once..... use a pressure tester to bleed, makes it easier to get the air out.
