Default Loose Thermostat?

Alright so I started finishing up my belt and pump job. I put the Paragon thermostat in the Paragon pump with the old snap ring and I can turn the thermostat while it's in there, is it supposed to do that? 85.5 944. I am so far away from driving my car I'm so sad lol but I keep on trudging. (School starts on Sept. 2nd and I can't take her with me!)

Did you put the seal on it? Properly? It's split...and goes over both sides of the lip of the thermostat.

Yessir I did. I even tried with my old thermostat and it was a little tighter but not perfect. Never tried with the old pump, I sent it back asap for the core charge.

Well... I have a low-temp thermostat in my 944 (have had for years) that has no gasket on there. See, I simply forgot to install that part and realized it only AFTER getting that damn snap ring back in.

Since I was still bleeding from removing it in the first place, and since the thermostat was still firmly intact and not going anywhere (but it was "loose" and turnable) I put it back together anyway.

Still fine to this day, and I can still squeeze my upper coolant hose and hear the thermostat "clicking" in its housing!

Not really reccommending anything here, just sharing my experience... LOL

Okay as long as nothing exploded or went catastrophically bad, then I'm set. Thanks!
Lol @ snaprings btw.
I nearly put my eye out trying to put it in, and then out, and in, and out...

Seriously, buy a pair of SR pliers. One sraight-tipped and one right-angled. Best $15-20 you'll spend...K maybe not quite the best but you get the picture.

+1 with a loose T-stat here. I figured I could fix it later.
Pellican shows a gasket on both sides of the t-stat and with a shim behind the C clip. Check it out. http://www.pelicanparts.com/PartsLoo...5-00-print.htm

There are two different gaskets... One is thicker than the other. Which one you use is dependent on the depth of the thermostat 'groove' on the waterpump. On my last pump job (sourced from Paragon) I had to use the larger of the two gaskets supplied with the new thermostat to make it seal properly.

In my experience if you purchase an aftermarket thermostat from your local auto parts store, they will not come with the proper gaskets. Buy it from a Porsche specialist like Paragon, and it comes with both gasket options.

Eric is right on. There are two different gaskets, with the proper one in, it should be fairly difficult to get the snap ring into the groove all the way. Usually i use a screwdriver and a rubber mallet to help tap it in far enough. If the thermostat is loose at all, then it is the wrong gasket.

I bought mine from 944online. IIRC the thicker seal came in the pump, Do I just need a shim?

I had a thought...What if I put the oring from my old thermostat between the snapring and the new one? Would that be acceptable if it makes a nice seal?
Essentially I should call Paragon and bitch at them.

I would just get a thicker seal. Call paragon and let them know it didn't have the thicker seal in it. It isn't their fault, all the parts come from Worldpac and then get shipped to the customer. I have noticed lately that about half the thermostats on only coming with one seal. They must have had a packing error somewhere along the manufacturing line.

Jason and the guys will get you squared away.
