I'm going to say it sounds exactly the same when throttling or engine-braking, but it seems to be just a little quieter when I depress the clutch and coast. At 45mph, it is maybe 75dBZ (throttle/engine-braking), but goes down to, say, 72dBZ if I coast.

It's not a particularly unpleasant sound, IMO, which is why I only recently became concerned. It doesn't sound like metal being chewed up. It sorta sounds like a swarm of honey bees, only metallic. Or, perhaps like a jet engine being fired up before ignition.

Stormchaser, you have deleted the factory crankcase vacuum system (or LR has). This is going to cause your turbo seals to fail pre-maturely. Search the Turbo boards for the fix.
