Here is a different read on this but in the same tone,
I have had 1986 944NA for 12 years now and it too is my daily driver. I don't turn wrenches too much but here is how I see it. My car has all the latest in great options that are out today in most cars and goes as fast and is as economical as most hondas (not worth the capital letter). The overall cost of this car so far to me has been the same as getting a G35 coupe (which I think sucks if you drive one compared to our P cars but they do look good).
The one thing I know we all can appreciate is the fact that when you get a chance to drive any Porsche on the road in light traffic or on a very long open stretch is that it give you options in your driving. It also gives you the ability to be a better driver and make those A to B drive a fun one rather then a commute.
There is a statistic out there that most people own 8 cars their whole lives so why waste one of your 8 on a car made like a go cart. Also if you plan to spend two hours or more in your car driving it and you own a Porsche that you want to be driving why would you driver yourself crazy that way. Driving a car to get around in will only make you mad, sad, and have a poor outlook on life while you’re driving it. Trust me I know having to drive an Ford escort, a firebird, and now a GMC truck while my 944 gets work done to it and I would rather have the 944 then any of these in Southern California traffic.
As a matter of fact you should almost have to by a car P-Car to commute in for the rest of us and not just for you. You owe it to your love ones, your co-workers, and us fellow commuters that you be in a happy mood when driving and have a car you can handle at your best. So please for all of us buy a P-car (any will do) and make that commute the best it can be.

of course, in about 20 years AZ will be under a mile of ocean and we'll be taking vacations on the shores of Iowa...hehe

so maybe you have a point. I'll be able to drive my 944 down the palm lined boulevards of Minneapolis.

Would getting one of those be pure folly as a DD?

In my opinion, you'd be better off buying a late 79-81 Porsche 924. All the great handling of a 944, but with significantly more reliability. I mean, there's nothing to an Audi 2.0. It's got mechanical fuel injection (a fuel distributor with an air valve), no fuel injectors to go bad since they're just tubes, a fuel pump that's easy to replace (like the 944s), it's a non-interference motor so... God forbid you get lazy and don't change the belt, you won't destroy the top of your motor (and possibly your pistons).

It has the SAME interior as the early 944s, minus a few minor things.

Parts are dirt cheap, and the fuel economy is probably a bit better.

You won't get the eyeball bursting torque of the naturally aspirated 944 (hahah...), but it's still a decent runner. (What, like... maybe mid 17s in the quarter? That's really not that bad compared to that $1,500 dollar Honda you were thinking about).

Ideally, a 79-81 924 is probably your best bet. Any 944 you get for the money you want to spend, is going to need a bunch of stuff, and if not now, probably sooner than later. I see decent condition 924s that I wouldn't be emberassed to drive around, go for $1,500 all the time on eBay.

BlueDevil is right. I don't "commute" in my S2 - I drive a road course to and from my office everyday. VERY few $10k cars are gonna let you do that. I commute in my 330xi. 10x the price and 1/2 the fun.
