Default Valve Guides

Anyone here replace the valve guides (DIY)? I have a press and was thinking of doing it myself. FSM says you can do it cold but if 'facilities are available', heating the head and chilling valve guides is recommended. Unlike the transaxle, heating up the head appears to be optional.

You "can" do it yourself, the old ones will come out with an air chisel with a blunt punch, heating the head cooling the guides will get them in. But it really isn't that much to have a machine shop do it and do a proper valve job while you're at it.

Hmmm. According to my machine shop guy, heating of the head is absolutely necessary. Otherwise you'll tear up the head taking them out and putting the new ones in.

The head fits, barely, in the kitchen oven. For removal that's it. For installation heat the head and put the new guides in the freezer. Yes, it's extremely prudent to heat the head and chill the new guides.

But after the new guides are in you MUST do a valve job. So if you don't have the tooling for that I'd suggest a shop do the whole thing.
