I put 110K miles on my turbo in 3 years as a commuter. I did 200 miles a day and loved driving it on the highway. Then I would drive from Arizona to college in Michigan with the thing packed to the gills with school supplies. Maintenance is not too bad if you stay on top of things. An NA would be way cheaper as a DD. My back up was the Chevelle. 5000rpm on the highway and $40 a day for the commute made the Porsche seam cheap to drive.

Mine is a daily driver, 162 mi round trip. If traffic allows can cruise well in excess of posted interstate speed limits with no problems. Car loves to be driven. Stay on top of scheduled maintenance.
Get a PPI and plan to spend some time/money to bring all the neglected and improperly performed previous maintenance up to date before you put the car in daily service. Get help from someone who knows 944s, even if it means paying a pro mechanic. Don't expect to pay $2500 and have a reliable DD right away. I think of a 944 n/a as a $7500 car. One way or the other that's about what it will cost you (which is a great bargain any way you look at it) but some part of that cost can be in the form of your own efforts.

My NA (RIP) and now my Turbo is my daily driver. These cars if you find the right one will outlast any and outperform for that matter any honda. Plus their great looking cars.

I drive 45 min each way 5 days a week to work.its lasted all summer. Needs a few things though now, but I have a backup car.
It would greatly benefit you if you have the skill to do afternoon fixes if something goes wrong. Leaving it at the shop for a fix and waiting a few days or a week is often what kills it's commute value.

I've driven a 944 as my daily driver 80 miles a day for the last four years. Never let me down. Where's that piece of wood? The only thing you have to put up with is the frequent confrontations with the ricer boys. In the winter when it snows, I either work from home or take the truck.
I drove a Honda to work for 16 years, and I can definitely say that the 944 is WAY more fun. The downside is it doesn't match the mpg figures.

My Dad used his 944 as a daily driver for YEARS (except during the winter). Another lady in my PCA region used her '88 951 S as a commuter and a track car. 5 years ago she stopped using the 951 as a commuter and got a 968, but the 951 had 250K on it and is still going strong today as a her track and weekend car!

I'm really off the deep end - use my 931 (the '82) as my DD during the summer most of the time - mainly excluding when I have to haul serious stuff, then it's the minivan.
AC works and is key. Need to get the sunroof strap to vent hot air a little better. Also ought to get the windows tinted, but not fond of it, just the results. That back hatch sure lets in the rays! The only other downside is lack of cruise for long boring trips, but that should be overcome with a 944, esp later car...

I've been driving my turbo for pretty much daily since I got it 3 years ago. Working AC would have been a nice thing to have in it though. With a set of snow tires and LSD transmission it's surprisingly good in the snow too.

I bought mine with the sole purpose being a DD.
I also had my daughter's Honda Civic for a couple weeks when I was selling it. I did drive it a few times to work because it had a/c. After a few times, I parked it and went back to sweating my butt off in my FUN 944.

I use mine as a 'work car'. I often need to make road trips of 200 miles or so. I have cc and a/c and it's a joy to drive long distances. Sometimes I even take the long way.
Great mileage too (if you keep your foot out of the boost )

As everybody here as already said, a 944 is extremely doable as a DD. And as i'm sure you already know, you will be greatly rewarded with fantastic reliability as long as you stay on top of preventative maintenance. As soon as you neglect something (as you are no doubt aware being a 911 dude) everything seems to go wrong at once.
i use my 951 as my DD but i'll drive the g/f car ('95 Accord) when it breaks down.
I would recommend that if you can only find a beautiful example 944 for around $4-5k, spend the extra dough on it. Buying a 944 for $2k that has a few tings wrong with it will end up being an $8-10k car really fast.
