I have only driven a couple 944's but my 79 rx7 with a 20B! and equally matched suspension was a blast to drive, almost to say it could take on a 951, almost!

I expect the miata feels like an early RX7 (with more headroom, of course )

Very lightweight, poised, and tossable. The early rotary was just 5 hp off the 924, felt like it had plenty more usable torque, and the car itself was considerably lighter, but also had even weight distribution.

Plus taking it to the redline (7500, iirc) was actually interesting.

For driving around town, I preferred the RX7; for longer cruises (and occassional excursions beyond 130 mph, courtesy of a PO installed KKK turbo), I preferred the 924 - oddly enough, the 924 got around 30+ mpg, and the combination of 22 or so mpg in the RX7 and a small (12? gallon) gas tank made it really suck for trips.

Miata is smaller and more go kart than the original RX7. Plus the IRS in the miata makes it more stable than the live axle in the first gen that would bounce the rear end to the left or right when you hit the right bump.

The RX7 is a nice well balanced machine. The miata is a well balanced car. thats the best i can explain it. the miata makes the right sounds, has the right feel, the snickity quick flick shifter, just tight enough steering, etc. I cant praise the car enough. except when i try to get out of it, and for long drives. it is a twisy, zippy car. for a trip of 75 miles or more the RX7 or 944 is hands down the winner.

Reno, I have the 680 battery with the metal sleeve. Got it on ebay for around $120 shipped... I got some aluminum from home depot and bent it into a bracket. it looks loose but that battery does NOT move!!

944 hands down, imo

Plusher, more comfortable seats, better mpg, handling and brakes. Plus, you'll probably live through a serious crash.

You'll be hard-pressed to find an original RX-7 that hasn't rusted away.

A Miata may be in my future, after the kids are old enough that I won't be driving them both anywhere at the same time, or when they're old enough that they can ride up in front with the airbags.

Tuesday I took a 90 mile each way drive to pick up the M030 Konis for my S2.

It was a beautiful sunny day. I drove from long island to the middle of NJ. Guess which car i took?

Didnt take the Miata, no fun in the burning sun with the top down, too noisy for an all highway drive with the top up.

Didnt thake the S2. I would be coming home possibly in rush hour traffic.

Took the corolla. Automatic and air conditioning. Seats are not the most comfortable, but when i was in traffic, sitting that few inches higher and not shifting was delightful. Also got over 30mpg.

My friend had an 86 rx-7, back when I had a 944. We were friends from high school, then lost touch, then we bought our cars, got back in touch, and when we saw each others' cars we said "hey! that looks like mine!"

Well I hated his car. It was a ripoff, it wasn't built as well, and the first time I drove it, I drove it off a cliff into a tree. But it still had its own appeal and it was cool overall.
