Just in case any pioneers are reading / still following this thread:

Any progress anyone - sweet9fortyfour : how did it go? Did you get your mid-range problem sorted out? Dyno runs?

I became interested in doing this to my 944 late last year and have started getting the necessary equipment together. In case anyone is interested in a cheap build-it-yourself 'digital fuel adjuster' we have a shop here in Australia that sells kits - you need soldering skills and equipment, but a piggyback computer plus a hand controller for $140 AUD is a good deal in anyones language (esp now our dollar is cactus against the greenback). The website is www.jaycar.com.au

Now all I need is a late DME and i can start tinkering

With a decent piggy-back you can probably get a lot of different MAF sensor to ‘work’. However to get it to truly work properly requires internal changes to the DME code, not just adjusting the DME maps.
True. That's why the aftermarket MAF sales people have their own things for DME, stock 944 DME just won't run properly with MAF.

968 DME runs ;-)

Just happen upon this thread, converting from AFM to MAF requires entire re-write of the Air Model code in the DME without this your better off sticking with the stock AFM. Trying to make a MAF behave like a AFM is a waist of time and money because the MAF is a much more responsive device and to get the most out of it you really need the correct software servicing it. I know because I've been working on this very project for 3 years now in the 3.2L Carrera 84-89 cars. I have re-written the entire Air Model software and have the car running with a Mustang 76mm MAF now. I'm still fine tuning the software for best drive-ability and throttle response. This project is a investment of 3+ years on and off to fully understand all the program code in the DME and then last 6 months re-writing it.

I simply wanted folks to be ware of anyone selling you a MAF without a chip and most importantly a chip with altered code to support the MAF.

I am going to be installing the MAF kit from Miller Performance this weekend. They are pretty well established in the BMW community. And just released a kit for the 944.

So what were your results with the Miller Performance kit?

Its super easy to install. I had to do a tiny bit of soldering in the ECU to adapt it to a 28pin DME, but other than that its a 20 min job to install the setup.

It fixed a rough idle issue that I had... and the car definitely pulls harder mid range although I think there are some issues with the tune that is on the chip they provide with it because I have some hesitation when going WOT under 3000 rpms... They told me the tune was developed on a auto trans car, so that may have something to do with it. The dyno tests on millers test car showed a little over 10hp gain.

Did they tell you if they are they going to be working on improving the tune? Do you think it was worth it?

I was told that they were trying to find a local 5speed car to work on the tune with... no idea how long it might be before a new tune is out.

I would say yeah it was worth it. I'm still looking for more power and I think I'm going to be selling my 944 and looking for a turbo or a 928 though

I've been working on a MAF system for 84-89 911 3.2L and have re-written all of the DME software for the AirFlow to Fuel Injection pulse time. From what I've learned in doing this software re-write I can say that the stock AFM acceleration enrichment code for the AFM will not work with MAF. The stock Injection Enrich code results in not enough enrichment during acceleration. This could also be the issue with the conversion you have.
