Balance Belt Whine
Hey there dudes!, I'm new to the forum, My name is Phil and I own a 1983 Porsche 944.
I just did my water pump, got everything back together, Started her up and she runs great! But the balance belt had a whining sound so i Rechecked the tension and losened to exactly 28lbs, plus adjusted the Idler a bit and it quieted down a bit. It still has a Slight belt whine though, Is a slight whine normal??? or should it be perfectly quiet? I am also unsure of where the idler should be, I didn't Mark it when I took it off hehe.

Yep, don't worry. I've done this on several cars now and no matter what I do I cannot get rid of the whine. Too loose, and it vibrates against the belt housing. Too tight, and it screams like a tea kettle. I went for the happy medium between slapping the plastic housing and very loud whine. Basically, it seems you get some no matter what.

Have you thought about maybe a different type of belt?
I don't know 944s, I'm new here. But if it is a ribbed belt there is a good chance you can find a Goodyear Gaterback belt that will fit. These are quieter belts that might help if the while is from the belt itself.
