Default The ISV Mystery..

Ok so here's what I've gathered:

With the ISV unplugged, I can start the car by holding the throttle just slightly open and cranking. From there I have no problem revving her up and down freely. However, I have to manually hold the car at 1000rpm or so (no idle..)

With the ISV plugged in, I can start the car without touching the throttle and she'll fire up to idle. However, if I try to rev it up, the car will just stall out.

Any speculations guys??

bad afm?

Car should start/run and even idle (though probably around 500-600rpm) with ISV unplugged.
I left mine unplugged for a while by accident, couldn't figure out why it idled so low.

Is the idle erratic? Do you hear any noise from near the ISV? They can leak and wreak havoc on your idle.

I had this happening with my previous ISV. Pull it out and try blowing through it with one port capped with your thumb. If you can hear it leaking, that's probably your problem. If not, keep looking for vacuum leaks.

Idle is rock solid with the ISV plugged in.

It does idle with the ISV unplugged, but sometimes it needs a little throttle while cranking to get up there. Almost seems like the ISV is running all the time...even when the TPS clicks off of idle, the ISV doesnt stop running so opening the throttle just bogs it out.

Thats my current theory, anyways..

Okay, another problem with ISVs besides leaking is contamination. Your ISV may be gunked up and is sticking. Pull it out, give it a good shot of WD-40 or similar, be sure to drain it out as best you can, and reinstall. Can't hurt to give that a try, as it has worked for several people I know. Long term solution is to replace it, though.

I seriously doubt thats it lol I clean it everytime I pull the intake manifold off...which would be 4 or 5 times in the last few months

But hey! Stranger things have happened! I'll try that and report back here.

Then I guess you can rule that out. How about the TPS?
