Ring and Pinion Busted
I am pretty sure I have busted my Ring and Pinion. I was driving went to shift in second and I hear a grinding noise and the car started jerking. So I guess I"m looking at a new tranny. If anyone has one around the STL area or would be able to have it shipped that would be great. Also I am looking for a LSD tranny if possible. let me know. Also how hard is it to drop the tranny and replace it

Dropping the transaxle isn't that hard. First time for me took about 3 hours to drop and swap. You will need to make sure and get some cheesehead/triple square sockets. Try to clean out the heads of them before removal, this way you wont strip any.
Here's the Clark's garage write-up. http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/trans-03.htm
You also didn't state what year/model car so make sure to buy the correct trans. You can use a turbo trans in a NA but you will be hating life due to different sized gears.

Do make sure you get a snap-on triple-square socket for the CV bolts. There IS a difference between double hex and triple square. Triple-square are used on euro cars, where double hex are used on japan/import cars. I had what is believe to be a double hex or just a really crappy triple-square trying to take cambolts out...man, the snap-on man saved my life. The socket will run you $25 bucks. Get a 1/2 to 3/8 adapter so you can use a big 1/2" breaker bar with the socket. It's expensive, but use a ****ty one then go to a snap-on and you won't fuss about the price one bit!

I want to say its my ring and pinion since it made a grinding noise and if try to tow with an SUV it just locks up one of the rear wheels. I have 1987 924S so what trannys will all fit and not make me want to shoot myself. I would like to know what N/A tranny is good. I maybe supercharged within a year, but still want to have something thats good for now.

Can you get any gears? When my ring and pinion went out in my 1984, the right rear tire burned rubber every time I turned right along with a clunk and grind. Have you had that symptom too?
What year is your car?
BTW, I'm just curious if anyone has used a 944S transmission in an NA and how is the acceleration with that gearbox compared to the speed hindering, 951 box?

Here is the deal. My car when I put it in gear will do nothing and maybe jerk a little bit. But if parked on a hill the tranny is useless and my e brake doesn't work. I doubt my 1 year old spring center clutch has already failed. I know what he failing clutch is like it just won't move. This is all screwed. If anyone wants to help me out that lives in the STL area it would be greatly appreciated.

pull the trans drain plug (actually pull the fill plug first so you know for sure you can refill it) then pull the drain plug and see if the gear oil is of the 'Chunky Style'. You need a 17mm allen socket IIRC.
You can get some driveline lockups with a broken clutch spring but I would suppose in neutral that could not happen.

What are the best year trannies from? I don't know if I would like to have decreased Acceleration from changing the tranny. Are the 89 N/A trannies better then the 87 or 88's? What year has the lowest rate of failure and what not?
