I don't agree with that article at all, really...I daily drive my 924, and it gets great gas mileage, and has been quite reliable, and is comfortable on the freeway for long trips...I don't think it's a bad road car at all...it's just slightly underpowered, and the suspension just needs some sport shocks and sway bars, and it will handle quite well.

Here's mine:

Wow! That looks REALLY nice. I see the subtle customizations and they look REALLY nice. Excuse me if I feel the need to re-post your picture in my quote...

I really like the way your 924 looks.

As for everyone else, I wouldn't let that article bother you. The Porsche 924 is what it is. It's obviously not as performance oriented as a modern Ferrari, and it clearly isn't as luxurious as a higher-end Cadillac, but it's a "classic" late 70s / early 80s sports car from a premier automotive performance manufacturer.

I've owned lots of cars that people consider to be pieces of crap. The person who wrote this article clearly sees things (reality) from a different perspective, one in which image is more important than anything else. I get a lot of pleasure out of my 944, as I do with all of my cars, and that's all that really matters.

I wonder what kind of 924 that author based his review on. Did he test drive a particular car? And what shape was it in?

Maybe if he'd driven a mint condition 931 he'd have a different point of view?

underpowered, needs suspension work, what else?

yep missed the mark seems about right. How does the 924 compare to a Z? Yep, less power, more money and....

sorry, im not convinced.

I dont think Rob was attacking you in particular, now if he wrote an article on the edsel..... or heaven forbid he called the new gto a flop......

my opinion, hes just jealous cause he dosnt own a porsche

but honestly, i bought my 924S not knowing anything about any of these cars. and shortly after buying it, i realized i would have been a bit dissapointed if i ended up with a normal 924

Wow, this is an old one!

The name of the column is "Rust in Peace." The name of the article is "A Pretend Porsche." He isn't insinuating that 924s had a propensity to rust (although the early ones certainly did...) He is saying that the car was not designed as a Porsche, and its legacy has been severly tarnished as a result. This is true.

I thought the author presented a valid opinion and argument. Furthermore, I think he should be commended for taking the time to actually reply - and to do so with tact. He even commented on the 944 being "excellent." That's pretty legit in my book. Whether or not we like it - he's just stating facts. When a "classic" car w/25k sells for $2,500, then there's not a whole lot to be said.

Yes, the 924 "led the way" - right to a model line that is no longer produced. We can draw as many parallels between water and air cooled as we would like - but it's a far reach to compare a front engine four banger to a rear/mid engine six with the idea that both of them have water-cooling and therefore must be intrinsically linked. I seriously doubt the project heads working on the 986 and 996 were saying things like "thank god for the 924 or we never would have had the inspiration for this new vehicle." I don’t recall seeing Porsche marketing for either of these cars that talked about the 924/944/928 heritage that led to their water-cooled design.

A Porsche is a Porsche, and I like the 924 as much as anyone here - but let's look at this from a realistic standpoint. I'd much rather have a Datsun Z than an early 924.

BTW, John - your car looks great!

Yep, this is old! Can't say I dislike the Times as much as some contributors, but their auto articles are usually pretty sub-standard.

I remember the competition of the early 924 era very well, and those other cars are pretty much toast. Remember the Jenson Healy, the MGB, seen a 280 Z lately? The Graduate? What's a CRX or an old Rx-7 worth these days? Can you even find them (since many weren't galvanized, the scarcity may be driving up the value quite a bit!)? The good news is that, thanks to these kind of opinions, the 924 is VERY affordable now, allowing knowlegeable(sp) folks the opportunity to get some great deals on some great cars! Bought my first Porsche (924S) last year, and couldn't be happier with the deal I got. My teenage sons are looking to go the 924/944 route soon. Just bad news if you're looking to sell...

I used to have a 924 and I wouldn't buy another one. The 924S is different as it's a 944 without the fenders or the late 944 interior.

the original non turbo 924 was way too slow. If you think a 944 is slow you should drive a 924.

I'd rather get a 80s vw gti over a 924.....

I'd like to have a 924 turbo one day though.

I almost bought a 924 sebring edition for pennies, yes it wasn't fast, but I still thought it was fun to drive and would buy a nice one if I could get it for a steal.
