These cars aren't bad at all if you do everything yourself...and it creates a bond with the car...it's almost like your in a relationship once you've been inside it

No kidding about the relationship...at the rate things are going, my relationship with my car will outlast my marriage!
You absolutely must do your own work on the 944. You will be a better person for it.

Yeah $7k's way high. Ah well at the very least you're learning all about the complexities of these cars.

Hell, I picked up my 951 w/ 115k on the clock in amazing condish for $5500...

+1 on the checking the odometer; that stupid little plastic gear is notorious for breaking.

Oh, and WELCOME!

Spending $3,000 in maintenance on your car is nuthin'

I'd pull up my repair/maintenance/upgrade records for my 1989 944S2, but I really don't want to go into cardiac arrest!!! (I estimate having spent nearly $30k on the car since 2001... cracked head, new clutch, couple of H2O pumps, belts, electrical issues, oil, track tires & wheels, suspension upgrades, track upgrades...etc)

But everytime I turn a corner on a racetrack, it brings a smile to my face.

Welcome, and I am glad you got it fixed! You have a cool car that lots at your age wish they had. Respect it and act responsible. You now drive a vintage car, and I think that takes guts. I know lots of people who spend $3000 at the bars every year. Looking forward to some pics from ya'.

I've never worked on a car untill I bought this one. So far I put a stereo in with new speakers all around and an 8" sub under the carpet in the hatch. A new windshield washer pump and a couple of small plastic thing. It had black tint untill I got stopped by a state trooper. (just for the tint)

The other thing that made me think the car was worth 7 was the dash has no cracks. Which from what i've read thats pretty rare.

have to say - that engine compartment looks fantastic (other than the sound deadening material). my first one was 6500, 11 years ago, with 63500 mi. i don't know that you should feel too bad about the purchase, at least from the an initial glance of the photos.

These cars really aren't hard to work on. Anything that involves the clutch or getting the oil pan off is kind of a pain, but it's still do-able, and most everything else is cake. $1800 for a timing belt job is very high... you could rebuild the whole motor for less than that. The timing belts on these cars are really pretty easy to do, compared to modern FWD cars that I've worked on... I've done belts on three 944's now, and it's pretty simple, especially after you do the first one. Maybe I should become a Porsche mechanic... outrageously high pay for minimal work.

What? They become higher maintenance once you get inside them?

Nice looking car. You should get that crap off the hood and it will be much nicer. I think the 928 leather shop makes a nice replacement. Heres the link: http://928leathershop.com/Hood_Liner_Heat_Shields.html

yeah I agree 7k is way too much for an 85.5, especially with no clutch records... you coulda got a decent 951 for that
