California actually has a law which states that you can switch the engine on your car to whatever you wan't provided that engine is fitted with the emission system it came with when stock.
So if you can find the emission system that came with the v6 and some how find a way to fit it to the car you theoretically should be good to go..

If you do an engine swap the engine has to be of a later model year than the car's original. So you can't put a '82 Vette motor into your '83 944...why you'd want to when a '05 motor is available..

not to mention when you put in an 82 vette motor you'll need a bigger hood to accomidate the carb.. and yes, i'd much preffer the later motors, they put out more power when stock and are lighter as well (ls1).
