Default What is this part? *pic*

Several other 944 owners have asked me what this part is, but I'm not really sure what it is or why our cars all have one. I can't seem to find it represented in any diagrams. There is a vacuum line coming off of the brake booster which goes through a valve and then comes to a T... one side goes to the mystery bell-shaped part in the picture, and the other goes through the firewall (I'm guessing to A/C stuff but I haven't confirmed that).

Does anyone know what it is?

On an '83 it is located between the firewall and the right strut tower. On an '84 or early '85 it is located next to the battery. I don't know if late 944s have the same vacuum can. I've never seen one on my 968s.
