Default Sunroof problem

I just replaced the gear on one side of my sunroof. Not the arms travel from the retracted position to the halfway open position and back. I can't get it to go up all the way open. What do I need to do?

Check the drive cables to see if they're lined up right in the gearbox.

When I got my car the roof wasn't working right and I got all kinds of advice, mostly involving spending a lot of money. I found that dis-assembly and cleaning up the the dirt impregnated in the gears fixed everything hunkydory.

Well my stupidity has ruined the day again. With both arms retracted I put the ignition in position 1 and pressed the button to retract the arms and stripped the other gear. I think I also stripped the one I replaced too. I will order 2 more gears and try again. Don't let this thread die though. I am sure I will still have the problem when I replace the gears.

not to hijack but does anyone know why my sunroof will go up and down just fine, but the arms never want to retract? And yes I know how to operate it while its on the 1 position.

It was workig well until the gear broke. I think it has something to do with the swithes. Is there a definate pattern on how to adjust the switches sot eh arms travel correctly?

My sunroof wasn't making proper contact with the microswitch at the front, near the interior light. If I push that large triangular piece at the front of the sunroof a bit while I'm also pressing the sunroof lift button, it then goes all the way up, otherwise it gets stuck halfway.

If you find that to the the problem, there are 3 allen head bolts in the sunroof that hold that piece of metal in place, they might be loose. Pop out the 3 caps at the front of the sunroof and torque them down a little. If, like on mine, one of the bolts stripped the plastic threads inside the sunroof, just give it some loctite, then apply some pressure to make sure everything is nice and tight.

All i well on the roof. It wa all runing fine until i replaced the geat. I am sure it is probably just adjusting the switches, what is the best way to do this?

Clark's has a good description of how the sunroof works, and adjusting everything.

http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/body-03.htm

I found it most helpful to uncover the motor and cam assembly, then have somebody in the front operate the sunroof for me as I watched the cam and how it all worked. After a couple of open/close/lock/unlock cycles, I had it all figured out.

Don't forget the clutch! Stripped a brand new set of gears myself when I forgot to adjust the clutch

Oh yeah, since you say you stripped the gears, and the roof only opens half way, are you sure you adjusted the lifting arms properly?

Best way to do that is remove the gears and lifting arms, then, with the key in aux position, press the sunroof button so the arms (if they were in place) would move to the unlocked position. Then reinstall the gears, then the arms, with the little nubs as close to the rail guide housing as possible. I mean REALLY close to the housing, no gap whatsoever. Put the covers back on, pop in the roof, and try to latch it. Should hopefuly have everything back in it's right place.

Did yours ever work. I love the sunroof and mine worked fine until the gear stripped.

It had the older system before they changed it in 1986. So there were no gears like you have.

But it never worked properly as far as releasing and locking the roof. And the drivers side never pulled down the sunroof enough to get it flush with the roof.

Maybe I should just buy a 911SC and forget about the sunroof.
