Default Is my car an 83? or an 84???

Hey guys,

I have an 84 Porsche 944, or at least I think it is. I just found my owners manual and it says 1983 model year on it. It has my vin and everything on it. When I first got the car, it had a Georgia registration but didn't have a title. It said it was an 84, but in georgia apparently, you don't have to have a title to register a car past a certain year? I dunno... I live in Florida. After a little work, I was able to get it registered year. I told them it was an 84, but I don't really know.

Is there a VIN decoder somewhere?

Thanks!!!

Look at the VIN plate in the lower driver's side corner of the windshield. The year is in there.

Should be the last 3 digits; the first two of the last three are the year. (Mine is an '85, the VIN says 859)

Yes 10th digit is the year D=1983, E=1984. Just becasue it has a owners manual from 83 doesn't mean it is. the car is 22 years old the books could have been lost and then replaced

^^^ what they said - VIN position 10 is an alpha code for the year.

The rest of the VIN story

This is the VIN decoder I used way back when I got my '86

Jack, I just read your post on VIN's and the in postion W and P
W=Germany P=Porsche.

Audi for example is WA W=Germany A=Audi
BMW WB W=Germany B=BMW
Mercedes is WD W=Germany D=Daimler
ETC.

And with the above, being the actual manufacture, #3 is something different.
Position #3 is Type of Vehicle.
#0 = Sports Car (911, 944, 986, etc)
#1 = Cayenne
