Fumes in the cockpit -- solved!
It's not a bad exhaust gasket, it's not a bad cat. It's not the ventilation system.
It's an oil (?) leak. A slow one. Drips down, no harm no foul, but at higher speeds the wind pushes the drops onto the exhaust pipe, turning it into a smoky mess that comes into the cockpit.
I assume it's an oil leak, I can't quite tell. I've got an 87 NA automatic ... the tranny's at the back, is that right? I kinda had the hope it was just a bad transmission gasket, but it looks like it's a rear engine seal of some kind, which I presume means the whole damn thing will have to be disassembled to fix. It appears to be coming from above the aluminum-looking box on the bottom with little cooling fin-type things on it.
It's a slow leak (the mechanic showed me how even a minute amount of oil on the exhaust causes loads of smoke), so I got one of those presumably lame-o oil stop-leak additives.
Am I screwed? Should I just suck it up? "Suck" is the operative word, because it makes my clothes smell all oil-fumey.

The leak's somewhere at the back of the engine, above the flywheel ... I can't see where it's coming from, exactly. I do know it's not anywhere near the cam cover.

Holy CRAP! So I took it to a muffler place yesterday morning and after inspection by me and two other guys, it was decided that the exhaust looked beat-up but fully functional, then later in the day at another place to have the timing belt and water pump done ... and driving with a hot date in the evening the ENTIRE EXHAUST SYSTEM FELL OUT!! It snapped at the front end of the cat and let go beside the muffler, leaving it attached only at the tail.
It's at a muffler place today ... hopefully they'll be able to do something.
By the way, un-muffled 944s are DAMN loud!

Meanwhile I parked it at a muffler place, but some bastard stole my exhaust assembly (it was lying on the ground)! Which means I have to locate a new cat and a new muffler smack in the middle of a long frickin' weekend. Dammit!
I guess my road trip departure will be delayed (sigh) ...

Test pipe? I doubt the mechanic would do it. Actually I already mentioned the idea of skipping a cat and he said no way. "But my car's 20 years and doesn't need to pass emissions," said I. He still refused.
I'm hitting the local Porsche wrecker on Tuesday morning ... hopefully I don't get raped on a replacement (though the mechanic told me there's prolly a few hundred bucks worth of platinum in there).

The mechs I've talked to insist I can't use anything but a muffler designed for Porsche. That doesn't seem reasonable to me, I don't see why a generic one won't work.
