Default Baby gets a new clutch - glad it'll last awhile!

The damages will be about $2100. They started on MOnday, should be ready to pick up tomorrow.

The whole kits and kaboodle was done. All parts replaced, except for the flywheel which as resurfaced...
WHile I hung around for quite a bit of it, I wasn't able to be there for cracking it open and putting it back together...bummer...

I have to get that done soon but I'm doing it myself. Once I have enough money I can order all the parts.

Yippee...

Mine almost ended up like that; got to it before it went that far south. Nice pics.

nice pictures...i had the same thing done last summer when my rubber clutch ate it...maybe its just that i didn't have a dying clutch anymore, but shifting felt a lot better with the spring centered clutch

Only if I get to keep it after that. If so, then you've got a deal.

so what exactly are the symptoms of a clutch on the way out? and how long after the symptoms start do you have before it goes out?

are there any tests/ inspections you can do to the clutch to see if its still good

sorry for the hijack/ ignorant questions

I wondered the same thing, as I was sure I would be able to detect something.
At some point last year or so, I noticed a slight difference in the vibration during revving between clutch pressed vs. unpressed, but upon reflection, I don't think that was any sort of indication. Oddly enough, it started happening during the exact same circumstances as listed below...3rd gear, revved a bit high in slow freeway traffic.
That said, there was absolutely no indication whatsoever. I was driving along just fine, revved a little high in 3rd gear, and went to shift into 4th and it just didn't want to go. Before the shift attempt, I noticed nothing out of the ordinary. NO vibration, no sound, no difference in acceleration just prior to the shift. Nothing at all.
I am alway very attentive of any abnormalities when driving. Any noise, vibration, shudder...I notice all of it, and pay attention to all of it.

There's a clutch inspection hole that is supposed to have a rubber boot/plug. If the rubber plug is missing, I know that it seems to attract falling bolts... sort of like a black hole. That's the extent of my clutch inspection knowledge

You look into this hole (next to the starter) and measure the travel on the clutch fork...
According to Clark's, a new clutch should have travel around 18MM, and replacement is needed when the travel reaches or exceeds 34MM.

Picked the car up today, they had a couple minor problems with a bracket, so the rear had to come back out.
Upon first impression, I notice a slight difference in sound and overall vibration when letting go of the accelerator. Shifting is definatly an improvement over the old clutch, not that it was a problem before. Pedal action is smoother, a little easier.
I'm not sure if it was road noise, but there did sem to be a sound that was sort of like a Jumbo Jet passing overhead, but not so loud. I'll be driving the car this weekend and paying attention to it.

With a new clutch in, and thinking back, I do think there were some warning signs that I had not thought of before. I've noticed lately that while taking of from a stop, or shifting from 1st into 2nd, the shift would somtimes be "hard" and the car would lerch forward or backwards (loss of momentum), as if my shift (foot hand foot) timing was seriously off.

Something to think about.

As a bonus, they put the power steering belt back in that I ripped off during AutoX a month ago when I picked up the 911. I can finally steer with ease.
