Funny you mention that... I almost did that last weekend with my oil change until I rationalized the situation. I was really pissed that my oil filter wrench was too small.

Moral of the story...

Take your new filter to the parts store when you get the filter wrench and make sure it fits.

ok, more specifically then, the OEM brand, type B, from Autozone fits the Mahle filters for 944 (and the Mahle for Audi A4, for that matter).

Actually the cap wrench that fits the 944 will work on all Porsches (from 944 on i believe) And most other recent german cars.

It's always been pretty easy, IMO...just unscrew it using those big arms you've got from all the torque-wrenching.

Get this: I bought a porsche filter, got a end wrench to fit it perfectly, and came back from the store and the one that was on the car (it was some lame brand) from the PO was SMALLER! I used the chisel-stabbing method with great pleasure. I had just fixed a PS reservoir leak so that area was nasty, anyways.

Stabbing it with the screwdriver takes commitment though. There's really no turning back after that

stabbing with a screw driver doesn't help, no room to turn it and you have a mess with all the oil.

remove the ps reservoir to remove the filter???????

Screw driver to get it started.

OT: Try this to properly pronounce 'Oel' in German. Form your lips in a circle like you're going to say 'O' and, while holding this position with your lips, say 'EEEE'. There, perfect German. Did I mention oel is one of my favorite German words? We now return you to your regularly scheduled program...

Yeah, you get slightly more room to use a conventional oil filter wrench, even though i can do it pretty easily with a conventional wrench anyways.

This is off topic, but you seriously have, I think, the best looking 944 interior EVER.
