I would have thought the tach would have been in the center from the factory. Seems like all sports cars these days have it setup like that...

This pic is from my late model car, but I would assume the wires are routed the same in the early cars. Took me a couple of days to find this myself - they did a good job hiding this from the factory. If you pull back the carpeting and then the rubber/plastic layer with the sound deadening on it, you will see the hole where the wires run through to get into the accordian (circled in green in the pic). The black rubber/plastic layer will crack like no other when you peel it back, but it presses back into place without issue when you're reassembling.

You don't have to cut anything back there, but you do have to reroute your speedo cable outside of that support box behind the cluster and even then it is a tight squeeze trying to get it hooked up in the new spot.

Wow! That's hilarious! The inside of my 1984 Porsche 944 looked exactly like that when I bought it too. Like yours, the previous owner painted the entire interior of the car with a can of black spray paint. He painted over the entire dash, the gauges, the switches, everything. He then tried to get the paint off the gauges with a brillo pad (or something abrasive)...

I have COMPLETELY replaced every piece of the interior with all new or good condition used pieces off eBay.

Like you, I also swapped out the yellow 944 gauges with the more serious looking 924 gauges.
