Odometer abuse and the track.

Odometer abuse and the track.
Ok, so last fall sometime I fixed my odometer with the Rennbay kit. It stopped working a little while later. Travis suggested that there might still be some snot in there. So I took it apart and cleaned it. Worked fine for the winter...didn't drive much.
In march I had a track day. Worked to and from the track Saturday...Sunday morning on the way in, I noticed it stopped.
Fixed it again. It worked 76 miles or so and died in/before the first session the past weekend. What gives?
I find it hard to believe that there's more junk in there. I can't think of what might be wrong. I don't reset it with the button.. Any guesses before I dive in for the 5th time?

Have you checked your speedometer cable? Particularly if you've been having issues iwth a bouncy speedo, part of the problem could be that your odometer just isn't getting a good speed signal

mine did the same ,I bet its still got a piece or two of the plastic in it.Travis told me to clean it well I thought I did .There was still small pcs. in it .pulled it apart 3 times to get it to work right.thought each time I had it perfect each time!!!

mine kept doing that after repair, I must have had it apart 10 times. I finally took everything apart, every number roller gear and axle, and cleaned them all off. Then I cleaned them again. Then reassembled with white lithium grease. You have to be careful, the gear trains like to get bound up. Spin it quite a bit to check for operation before reinstalling. Has worked for about 6 months now, which beats the 120mile average it had been between teardowns.

Mine stopped working so I took it apart to check. To my surprise the gear was already swapped with a Rennbay unit, but it was partially stripped! I guess it wasn't installed properly and it slid out a bit because only half of each tooth is stripped.
The odometer on the Turbo is busted too. Looks like I'll be buying two gears!

i put the paragon gear in my turbo and it worked fine. Installed a rennbay gear in my brother in laws car a few weeks ago and it worked for awhile, then quit. We pulled it apart and it had a bunch of junk in there. Cleaned it real good, worked for awhile, then quit again. Seemed to be jammed up again- recleaned, reinstalled. Worked then quit. Then the one in my turbo quit. Cleaned mine up and blew it out w/ compressed air and so far mine is still working. Im wondering about his though, last time we pulled it apart the little motor was quite hot.

Same here -- and I'm glad to hear that I wasn't the only one with odo problems. The first problem was a busted gear, which I replaced with Rennbay gear -- worked for 10k miles. And then I went through the break/clean/break/clean routine for two months before I got sick and tired of it and bought a replacement odo.

The problem with the odo. is in the number wheels. I fixed mine a year ago and have
had no problem since.
It is caused by too much end play in the wheels and usually fails while driving hard.
I fixed mine by wrapping a small piece of wire around the number wheel axle on the
gear end which reduced the end play to almost zero. Do this on both the trip and
main odometer and all fixed!

Interesting, I will gave that a try. I don't care so much, I change the oil after every couple of events or every 3000 cars I pass, but my gas gauge is wonky as well, I never know how much gas I have...though the light came on for the first time this weekend at the track.
