Odometer abuse and the track.

Has anybody aside from boost feen switched to the later 968 style electronic odo that doesn't have any of the stupid gears? My odo is still working with what I assume is the original gear, so I haven't had to mess with any of this yet, but an electric one sounds like a good idea.

Glad to hear others have problems with the odo. Mine does the same thing. Works for maybe 100 miles then stops, and I have to pull it all apart. I am getting really good at that. Will super clean it next time. I know there will be a next time.

When replacing the gears, a can of the compressed electronics duster in the gauge does wonders to free it of rogue pieces of old gear. You can grab it at any computer store. I believe it is used for dusting key boards, computer internals, etc..

i blew mine out w/ the compressor- 75+ lbs- carefully- there was some junk in there though. My brother in law took his all apart and cleaned it real good last night and so far its working fine.

I saw the whole comment about the slop in the odometer numbers. This is true. If you have play in these, you can break even the new gears! I had a guy fix the odometer on my 928, which is the same instrumentation as the 85.5+ 944s. You ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO get rid of the play between the odo. numbers before putting the odometer back together or you will have to keep going back in there.

I think this thread jinxed me. I read it yesterday and thought, heck I have put 1000 miles on mine since I fixed it and it still works, no problem for me. The I hop in the car to go home from work and the odometer quit while I was watching it. Gotta love that. I had cleaned the heck out of the gears when I did it so I will try the wire trick.

You can prove the end play problem. When you have the broken gear off, turn the gears
to make the odo. wheels turn. Do this very slowly and eventually the number wheels
will bind up and stop turning. This caused by the little wheels between the number wheels
coming out of alignment with the big wheels, caused by too much end play in tne assembly!
