Default 1986 944 front struts

I need to replace the struts on my 86 944. Does the 1986 have sealed struts or inserts?

Also, what struts should I get. The car is my daily commuter and weekend cruiser. I'm looking for a setup that is a little more sportier than stock.

Thanks in advance for your help.
Mark

I did the Boge inserts up front on my 85.5. They work surprisingly well and are a tad stiffer than stock.

I did KYB inserts on 2 NA's and they were much better than the OE Boge or Sachs. How long they hold up is another matter but they seem to be doing well. The Boge and Sachs inserts are hydraulic only where the KYB are oil/gas units. I feel the gas type hold up better than fluid only when they get hot from constant duty cycles on real bumpy roads. Unfortunately most of us only had worn out inserts to compare against so the results are pretty subjective.

I have an 88"S", and im doing my suspension this week... i've been convinced by a mechanic i know, he has been to a shock seminar, and they dismantled several brand name shocks/struts, and he says they all agreed that KYB's are far better, infact from what he said they are much beefer inside. He also said that they extrude the shock body's insted of doing what Koni does which is bend, weld, and grind the bodies which creates a hard spot, where rings wear out....what do you guys think? I am convinced, and think ill go KYB since im probably only going to have my car for another 2 years.

i would go with koni over KYB anyday
rather than taking it from me
or even better, go with bilstein, not really an option for me though since my class doesnt allow revalving

You have to remember the original request was for a DD and weekend cruiser. I think anyone would prefer Bilstein or Koni over the KYB but the former adds up to over $275 for a pair; the KYB's are $74/pair. For his purposes I think he'll find the KYB the best bang for his buck. I've had Konis' Sports go dead on 2 cars already, unfortunately I,m not the original owner making their warranty as valuable as free mud to me. Sure they can be rebuilt but at what cost and how long would it take tying up the car for weeks? For a DD he can't go wrong IMO and I've used several brands on 944's. The KYB is still a better choice than Boge or Sachs inserts. You got to love the early NA's though, front inserts in less than 90 minutes easy and no changes to alignment specs.
