Help! Heat won't turn off...
in my 89 944S2. Coming home from the mechanic today, the heat decides to remain on the "completely hot" position, no matter what I did with the *****, sliders, vents.
Since it was recently discovered that my AC system was completely dry (ie: no freon - it was never converted to R134a), the compressor is still in place but disconnected (mechanic recommended this). But that was last week - I've driven the car yesterday and today -- just this evening the "heat full on" started.
So on the way home today in the rain, it starts getting really hot in my car. Really toasty. Sounds like the heater coil is stuck open. Any idea why this would happen? More importantly, any ideas if there is an easy fix for this?
Thanks!

I read a while back that it's a clip on the slider that normally breaks....but I think that was on the old HVAC systems. I've got the same problem in my car, I've just never taken it apart to figure it out.

I was moving the slider a little while before the heat went to "full."
Gotta love Rennlist.

Look here. Scroll to the bottom.
I had this happen to me once. The repair cost me $1.52 in parts and was a one-beer job. And that's only because I knocked the bottle over!

On late model 944s (1985.5 and newer), there are several problems that can cause the full heat condition. The first and most common problem is a damper linkage in the driver's side footwell (for left-hand drive cars). Stick your head in the footwell and look up and toward the center console. You should see a small diameter metal rod which rests in a white plastic support and is held in place by a metal retaining clip. On later model 944s, there are two damper linkages instead of one and they are located behind a plastic cover. One of the plastic clips on the linkage may be broken preventing the linkage from operating the damper. When the damper fails to operate, the system fails to full heat. Most German cars are designed to fail this way. It's a safety feature to keep you from freezing in winter. The first picture below shows a linkage that has come loose from the support because the metal clip is broken. The second picture show the linkage properly in place with a new support and clip along with the part numbers for the support and clip.

How many bolts hold on that infernal cover? I've taken out 2, and it feels like it's still being held in by something... and I can't see another bolt...
and I found that little linkage thingy, yeah, that's not connected. it's hanging outside the cover... how, I don't know... why the heat operates in the morning, and not in the evening, I don't know... but I do know, the linkage is outside the cover, and I can't get that damn cover off for the life of me!

Yep - it's the plastic clip. Will order two plastic and two metal clips in the morning...
Porschephile - there are only two screws that hold that plastic cover - I had to give it a decent tug to get it off, after removing the two screws, of course.
Thanks again, and Clarks Garage ROCKS!
