Default spare tire question

Was reading an issue of Upfixen der Porsche today (1990 - 1992) and there was a Q&A regarding the collapsable spare.

Got me thinking....has anyone had a bad experience with theirs?

If I were taking say a 3 hr trip (can you say Hershey) what would you all recommend since I've only seen mine once...when I first bought the car...

best

Joe

Get a AAA membership and remove spare tire for weight savings.

I had a collapsible spare on another (non-Porsche) car and the first time I went to use it, it inflated all wrong, popping off to one side, instead of being centered over the rim. So I don't have a whole lotta faith in collapsible spares.

It came in handy about two years ago when a tire blew out on an '90 S2 - the stock air compressor was non-functional however. Drove home 40 miles on it and didn't need to wait for a tow.

If you do a test inflation, you might find that it's a serious PITA to deflate it properly....

I used mine on my 84 944 twice. It worked great and deflated to normal each time. Did what it needed to do and got me home each time. No complaints really especially on a 20 year old tire.

Used mine - used a vacuum pump to squish it back down. In good shape for a 18 year old tire - my car turns 18 next month.....

Used it, let me get the car where it needed to be. Good piece of mind. But I will use my roadside assistance first if I can.

When I got my car I took my spare out and it looks like it hadn't been removed in the 20years since it was place in the car, as it has a huge flat spot on one side where it had been resting in the wheel well. Is it just asking for trouble to try using it with a flat spot?

After last year's Fest I caught a bolt along a construction site in the road and lost my back driver tire. The spare inflated like a charm, got me from cleveland to columbus just fine... And then when the fix a flat didn't work from outside Columbus to cinci fine as well! Drove it for a few days until I got a replacement tire, and it deflated easily enough after the ordeal was resolved. You can't be too careful, and yeah, AAA offers free towing for 100 miles, but it's nice to know that if you're in a situation where you're on your own, you can get yourself back on the road.
