The turbo is very well-mannered and drives like an NA..until you hit 3k. Above 3 grand the kompressor is all spooled up and you get a kick in the pants like nothing you've ever felt before. Put some mods on it and you can smoke GT Mustangs

Last time I checked, GT's did 60 in just over 5 seconds. Out of the box, a 951 will do it in 5.5.

8v 2.5L n/a is a fun car, but slow as heck. 0-60 in roughly the mid 8 second range. Runs out of breath by 4500 rpm.
8v 2.7L n/a has a little more low end grunt and a little better top end power over the 2.5L engine, but not by much.
Those are the only two I have driven and I really couldn't tell the difference. Later one was more comfortable though, smaller steering wheel and other slight differences.

Welcome to Rennlist.
Nov 1987 Road and Track 4 cyl Porsche comparison:
Car 0-60 1/4mile Top speed
944 8.7 16.6 121
944S 8.0 16.2 131
944T 6.6 15.1 149

Feb 1989 Automobile Mag Comparison
944 8.0 N/A 137
944S2 6.9 N/A 149
944TS 5.7 N/A 162 ( the 89 year model was "S" specification)

Add to that a Turbo S can have another 50+ hp for well under a thousand dollars.

I sold my very clean '87 NA and bought a '89 Turbo because I was working hard to outrun minivans to the tunnel. The Turbo will get into serious speeds quick enough without launching it hard. There is no comparison. I was actually looking at a 968 until I drove the car I have now.

Default Are non-S, na 944 "Yawners"

Based on all of the great info. that you members offered, I am left wondering what the attraction is for a non-S, na, 944. If I understand the commentaries and specifications correctly, the non-S, na, 944 is, to summarize:
1) Handles exceedingly well
2) Doesn't have much punch
3) Difficult to get more HP from - even with major $$
4) Should have dark-tinted windows to save embarrassment from being recognized by the occupants of minivans that whiz by.
The bottom line: I guess I'm not too motivated to get a non-S, na, 944.
Thanks for all the great responses!!!!

Oh yeah of little faith.
Once you drive one, preferably a ROW car, you never look back!
US cars ARE underpowered. My '84 has all the power I will ever possible need.
I DO NOT get overtaken by minivans, dragged off by the occasional pickup maybe. But torque rules, so I am told!
With US roads and policing you would have a ball in a 951. If most of the travelling is on speed restricted parts, an n/a.
If I had a 951 here I would either/both be in Jail or unlicensed. Probably both.
Just my .02c worth from the Great South Land.

My 944 NA will kick any stock or even lightly modded turbo on a race track.
It has only 134whp on a good day.

Of course my 944 NA is race prepared car and weights 2450lbs without me in it.

Truthfully the 2.5L NA is wonderful little car. Sure it has not hp, but it still has enough to out run most cars when the roads begin to turn. Even with 150 crank hp you can take the to 125 mph and be tossed in jail. I do have to dissagree with the lack of power over 4500 rpm. In my 944 with is stock motor it runs best over 4000 rpm right to 6000 rpm. Get out on the open freeway and try running run from 75 to 100 mph and the sorry little NA will do much better vs mama's minivan. The NA is not quick accelerating car, but it still has plenty of guts to be fun. The same way a Miata is fun with 120 hp a 944 is fun with 150. I used to have an 84 NA daily driver. Really fun sweet handling car. Eventually sold it because I had too many Porsche, but it was fun. My 944 Turbo S is also fun, but in many ways does not have the handling feel of the NA. I think the problem is that due to all the hp on tap you tend to drive the hp of the car. With the NA you have no hp so it allows the chassis feel to shine through be the spotlight.

Part of reason I race a 134 whp NA car is by driving such a low hp car I had to learn to be a much better driver than in a 951 to be "keeping up". Well my best ever time in 951 at my local track was 1:19. At the time I felt there was "nothing left" and that was it. First time out in my 944 NA I hit a 1:20 with lots fo room for improvement. Not a few years later with few car changes, my best in my 944 race car is 1:12.9. That is a solid 6 seconds. I know other drivers in similarly preppared cars turning 1:12.3's so I know there is still more time our there.

I Love my NA!
