My thought was it was clean too...the cam lobes look like new with no wear. the chain has no play in it and looks like it could last indefinitely.
I am working on the cam cover refinishing this weekend...will post.

The tensioner was a breeze...just depress it on the pad and manouvre it out. Installation is the opposite. Some wiggling, but it was simple.

The j-tube comes out, then you can take the tensioner off...it's one piece. The pad on the top slides off and the bottom one has 2 screws. You get new screws from Zims with the set...$150 USD plus shipping. It sucked for me in Canada, since customs grabbed some $, + GST, total was $220 CDN....since I have low kms...125,000 kms, I'l leave the tensioner until next time around, then I'll replace it too. Likely that will happen with a belt change and waterpump change.

My old house in Bedford was walking distance away from Zims... but no 944 then. Now I'm a full 5 miles away.
Thanks for the info. It's making it easier to maintain this lump!

I think its nuts that they charge $35 for just the top pad, but the top and bottom pad kit is $150. I wonder what the justification is for basically charging $115 for the second pad and screws. My car really needs the bottom pad but I bought it before the kit was available.

If my car had over 100,000 miles, I would have bought the whole tensioner with new pads from Ian at 994online...its @ $350 or so IIRC.
When I looked at the pads fresh out of the plastic bag...I thought...damn I was ripped off. The old pads were yellowed (from oil I assume and age) and seemed ok. I've read posts were guys took the pad off and it cracked into 2 pieces on removal...so...
Better safe than sorry I suppose.
The alternative makes the hair on my neck stand up...

You mean the unpleasant sound of your chain whipping in its slack, the grinding of plastic against camlobes and the sudden knocking sound of your pistons hitting your stuck-open valves?
I'd say $150 is well-worth it.

Exactly the point.
Looking for the bottom pad. Top pad was already replaced. The tensioner moved freely and was in good shape.
Just need the bottom pad, and it really didn't look bad when I had the entire thing out, while the top one had a crack 1/4 of the way through, or so it looked.
