Unhappy My timing belt broke

My timing belt decided to let loose at about 6k RPM's this afternoon. I pulled the covers after the tow truck dropped it off at my parents' house and the belt was completely shredded near the water pump.

I'm trying to figure out what to do with this car right now. Could someone give me a list of parts needed to repair this and maybe an estimated DIY cost? I know I'll need some valves, valve seals, belts, rollers, front engine seals (they're leaking and that's probably what caused the belt to fail), and a head gasket.

Time to drink the pain away...

id say see if your wp is spinning- may need one of those. Best bet, take the head off, get some valves for the ones bent, and take it to a machine shop. Rest is just $ right.

If this is just a DD and you want to do this on the cheap buy a used head hand lap the valves and do a basic front end maintenance, you can probably do this for ~$500-$600. Did the belt break due to neglect or was it just random?

I'll check, but it should be good. My odometer doesn't work, but this set of belts and the waterpump have at most 15k miles on them.

It is just $, but I'm still a broke college student for the next two months and I wouldn't want to run my bank account too low right now. Either way, I'll probably end up fixing it, its just a matter of getting parts overnighted and doing it before spring break is over, or waiting until I've graduated and doing it over the summer.

It's my only car for now, but I don't absolutely need it. I plan on buying something else in May once I graduate anyway.

It broke probably due to oil from an oil leak I "never got around to fixing." So, its most likely my own fault.

My friend/ roommate (his uncle owns a repair shop) knows a guy who does great valve work. He's going to give him a call for me tomorrow and see what he'd charge.

This head was rebuilt a couple of years ago when my headgasket failed, so other than the bent valves it should be in good shape.

Still ask around... I got a complete used head for less than the cost of just a few replacement valves. I figure you can still have it lapped cleaned up and be ahead compared to where you would have been.

I'd still do the pump, seals, and rollers though.

When my T-belt snapped at around 3k I bent 7 out of my 8 valves. I priced everything out and it was cheaper to get a rebuilt head. I chose to go with Ian at 944Online as he had a warranty and competitive price. Saves on time too. I went with Paragon for the head gasket kit, belts, rollers, tensioners, seals. All together it was right around $800.
Go with a Gates PoweGrip OE belt it is made in UK. Paragon sells them. Better belt design and construction than the ContiTech IMHO.

That scares me. My belt is within 500 miles of needing a retension. Putting that on my to-do list.

I bought a fully rebuilt head for $300. I'm sure you can get a used one for like $100 if you look around.

There is a chance that the pistons were damaged too. Sometimes the damage is negligible, sometimes it's too severe. You'll have to remove the head to finally know. If your pistons are FUBAR, the cheapest way to go would be to buy a used engine and swap it in.

That would be my concern as you said it let go at 6K RPM. You'll need to inspect the dimples in the pistons very well. I'd go to the point of using some crack identifier (same as used on boat props) to be sure. Cracked pistions quickly become shrapnel.

I guess I'll most likely be pulling the head this weekend in order to determine what my exact situation is.

If the pistons are FUBAR, this car will be sitting for several months and won't be powered by a 944 NA motor again.

I'll be keeping my eyes open for used heads.

If you scrap your head, send the good valves to SidViscous. He needs 'em.
