Question Brake pads - occasional track use?

I'm trying to find a decent set of brake pads for my dad's '88 944 NA. I was thinking KFP Magnum Gold, or Porterfield R4S. The car will be mostly street, with an occasional DE/AutoX. This will be his first year with any sort of track event, so I don't expect him to overheat the brakes too much.

Do any of the above pads squeal bad on the street? I have Performance Friction PF97 on my 911. They're a fantastic track pad, and bite real good on the street too, but I need to swap them out because the squeal is annoying.

Thanks!

I suggest the Pagid Sport pad, dark blue, don't confuse them with Pagid Blues. I believe the designation is RS 4-2-1.

I use them on my daily driver ('02 996 C4S) and occasional track days.

Don't use Hawk's then... I love their stopping power but anything more than the HPS and they dust up and start to squeal.

i used to buy metal masters from paragon for my n/a - worked great on the street, saved the rotors from wearing quickly, and on a two day DE i would about half kill them but still have brakes the whole time.

I am using the R4S right now with the 951 Brembo's. Great dual use auto-x and street pad. Have not been able to overheat them yet. Very little dust and no noise at all. I like them alot, but for the sake of experimentation i am going to use the KFP Magnum Gold next.

I dont think you will find Pagid pads available for the 944 n/a single piston floating calipers (at least they were not avaible a few years ago).

I believe the KFPs are a carbon kevlar compound (the old Cool Carbon brand name) and Porterfield R4S pads (also a carbon based pad) will squeal. Possibly more than your liking for a street car.

But keep in mind that new/novice drivers can be very hard on brakes (the cars often have stock/soft suspension, street tires, and new drivers tend to slow down too much for corners). So they are more likely to overheat brakes than an experienced driver in a well setup car.

Nothing destroys your on track confidence more than weak brakes. Go with a good track compound pad (Hawk Blues, Porterfields, PF97s, etc), and if they sqeal too much for street use - swap them out after the event.

For the occasional track / mostly street use, the KFP Golds should suit you fine. Yeah, they do squeel like a greased pig in a butcher's shop, but I suppose that's a small cost for fine stopping power...

Id get some OEM pads and swap track pads for events. It takes like 20 minutes to swap pads, and can be done on site at the event. Ive been very happy with PFC 97s in my 924S. They can be squeaky when they are cold, but they sure have good bite. They are a little squeaky but since I pretty much drive my car to the track what do I care, LOL.

I 2nd that...get a nice set of brakes and bleed the system really well with ATE Superblue DOT 4 fluid. It will make a big difference. If you are occassionally doing a DE then Hawk HPS Plus will work for the occassional track event and daily driver. If you plan on doing a lot of DEs then Hawk Blues work great but they stop like crap when cold so makes driving on the street a little iffy if you have cold brakes.

I've got Hawk Blues on my ITA car and they work awesome even though I have rotors smaller than 10" in diameter and stock single piston brake calipers. I'm only stopping about 2,200lbs though.

I am using PBR performance plus on front, and whatever was on rear when I bought the car. Eventually, I will replace rotors, bearing, and pads, but PBR's came highly recommended for "spirited driving"

Bleed the system with a MityVac and replaced with Castrol.

While you're down there- upgrade the lines with braided. The rubber ones are probably 20 years old.
They do make a difference.

If you are referring to Textar pads (as OE), those are not suituable for track use.

Pagid sport or race compound pads are not made for the Girling single piston floating calipers.
