To me, picking the car up by the transmission sounds like it makes about as much sense as having yourself hoisted up by the nuts. Sure, it will probably work, but do you really want to?

I've almost jacked up my car from the transaxle drain plug! Seriously, the liquid wrench and breaker bar wasn't doing it, so it was time for a bottle jack at the end of the bar. The wheels almost left the ground before the plug broke free.
Oh yeah, I've had no problems jacking it up from the transaxle.

I think it does less damage at the transaxle thatn it does to the jack points. It's very easy to damage the undercoating or to miss a little and bend things.

I've always wondered, but have been hesitant. I usually jack up the E46 BMWs by the diff, it makes changing tires easier and less time consuming. Is there a peticular technique or exact spot on the 951? Any area to be mindful of? I would only consider it for lifting purposes, to be quickly replaced by jackstands, but is it totally safe? It would be a great asset to me with my limited garage space.

NO WAY! NOT ME!. I will NEVER use trans to lift the car. Trans is aluminum case. I would never cosider jacking up any vehicle from an Aluminum case.
The differential on other cars is generally steel, NOT aluminum.
I believe MPD47 that he has never had an issue. I also guarantee I will never, EVER have an issue

Ever wonder how they got it on the car in the first place? If you look around the edges there are some big holes drilled in the case, maybe 3/4 inch, that they lift the whole tranny by at the factory...
