Default Whinning sound form trans or torgue tube

I have a whinning sound after my car warms up when I let off the gas at cruising speed you can really here it. If I hold the throttle steady it gets quiet. What do you think?

Tranny... swap out your fluid with Redline MT90 or equivalent, that's about all you can do until it blows up.

Don't worry about it much... my 87 makes the same noise. From what I've read, they all do. Changing fluid can help a bit and make shifting smoother...

I just did mine last weekend and it did quiet down a bit, but you have to figure that after 20 years they do have some play in them.

I've seen some random spares for sale on Portland and Seattle craigslist... pick one up and rebuild it while you drive the other, then when done swap it in and you'll get nice tight shifting again. Depending on mileage, it could be torque tube bearings, but from your description, I'd just bet on the tranny.

Don't worry, spend the 30 bucks on a fluid flush and keep on driving!

Sounds like a pinion bearing. That was a very common problem on the 968 6-speeds; seems that many of them had too much preload when they were built and it lead to a lot of failures.

If you have a good p-car mechanic around, take it to them and see what they think.

I've heard thats its a design flaw. My 951 and ex NA both do it along with a few friends cars.

What mileage? Ring and pinions with excess backlash (wear) will do that.

I've heard every 944 in my life so far make the same noise. I think it may be normal for higher mileage cars. What you have to really look out for is a clunk that goes with the whine. Putting Swepco blue transmission fluid in will quiet the sound down more. The sound is most apparent when the fluid in the tranny is old.

Do you still have a rubber centered clutch? If so, check it now!!

My car got that sound and about a day later the clutch went out and took the tranny with it. The shop said it was slack in the torque tube caused by the clutch and was worse for the car than dropping the clutch at every stop.

I think the only difference with the S is that it comes with the lower 5th. FWIW my S would occasionally make a similar noise under coast. It had 225K. It never created a problem. I think going thru the transmission and replacing the bearings and checking the r&P mesh would probably have fixed it. Just never got around to it...

Another potential cause of your whine could be the torque tube. It has a bearing inside that fails and will whine.
