Default starter issues...

Went to start the 944 yesterday and all that occured was a grinding sound, and the whine of the starter (heard since the car wasn't turning over). Fortunately, I was in a parking lot with a large slope, so I got going and popped the clutch and drove home. In my driveway, I turned off then immediately restarted the car and it started up. The starter has been for the last several months, grinding a bit after the engine turns over. I checked the starter and it's secure in there, so I pulled it out and the teeth look a bit polished but I'm not sure how a new one would look (ie, how deep the grooves should be, etc). The teeth of the flywheel look OK from the few I can see in the opening. What's the easiest way to turn the flywheel while looking through that opening and working solo? I'd like to check the rest of the teeth.

Thanks,
Matt

Picture of my starter teeth. Talked with Travis (Rennbay) and I'd thought I'd get the Rennlist opinion.

Matt,

I have no idea if your flywheel is OK, but I thought I'd let you know that Kevin (FSAracer) has a used starter for sale. Check out his thread.

If you have a large breaker bar and deep socket set, you can turn the engine over using the crankshaft bolt and it would turn the flywheel so you could inspect all the teeth. Good luck!

Thanks. Right now I'm trying to figure out if the starter teeth are ok or not. Tried to get as closeup a shot as I could. I'll crank the flywheel now that my brother is home, will be easier with two people.

Be sure to pull the fuel lines and spark plugs.

Yes, those starter teeth are hosed; they're not supposed to be tapered. Flywheels teeth are typically harder, so you might be OK there.

I'm guessing you mean if I crank the flywheel?

I got a new starter and the teeth are indeed hosed on the old one. Night and day difference. Installed the new one and it works to perfection.

Another problem bites the dust.
